Then, what you referred to is broken and needs to be added to the list of things to fix, that is, non-light weapons being finessable and not getting the appropriate bonus needs to be fixed.

IMO - Changing non-light finessable weapons to be a shortsword weapon type is not fixing the issue and is not correcting the weapon for rules compliance.

PS: Okay, that was my final 2 cents on the subject.

That's actually the way it's supposed to work. The rapier is a non-light weapon, but it is explicitly listed in the description as being a weapon to which you can apply Weapon Finesse. It is a special case exception to the normal rule that you can only finesse light weapons. (Interestingly, this means that you can Finesse AND Power Attack with a rapier at the same time, by the D&D rules. I like to think of that as the lunge.)

Absolutely correct, the cutlass is not used to pierce in practical application. While in theor, one could thrust the point into somone, that would be just as awkward as trying to effect a slashing attack with a spear.

@krunch: I'm sorry this isn't going the way you think it should, but Jesse's right, the rapier works the way it's supposed to. In real life the cutlass may very well be closer to a rapier but as far as the game-mechanic and rules go, it's closer to a shortsword.

    On another note:
Maybe the cleaver should fall into this category. :) ...running away now.

ok the cutlass should be a slashing shortsword - that sounds closest.

@jerryb: fyi - Spears can have anywhere from 6-inch to 18-inch sharp double-bladed edged tips at one of its ends.
Note: Spears are not just sticks with one single pointed-tip at one of its ends.

@cpdm: fyi - Fruella's Cleaver was previously changed to be a weapon type hand axe after much debate.

I thought that all of this was settled with the revelation that a Cutlass is equal to a scimitar according to the 3.5 SRD? A Cutlass is nothing like a Rapier, period. That cartoon picture someone put up wouldn't even make a good olive pick, let alone a good sword!

actually it was dicovered that its a scimitar in 3.nuffing rules and has its own stats in 3.5 which were posted somewhere. basicly the closest thing to it is a shortsword for how the game implements it.

Right. 3.0 called it a scimitar. 3.5 gave it its own stats, which are very similar to a shortsword (except doing slashing rather than piercing damage). It makes the most sense to make it a shortsword that does slashing damage (Since there is no disarm function in ToEE.) because that is the closest equivalent within the game.

The cutlass-as-shortsword fix has been uploaded. Thanks to everyone who posted rules info, opinions, and pointed out things I missed.

I don't recall seeing a Greathammer specialization slot listed in Feats.

Also, where does the Masterworks Maul fit in specialization wise? I would like to equip my Cleric with it. (Co8 5.0.0) Willing to upgrade.

The Maul and Greathammer both use the War Hammer proficiency.
