I would suggest applying the full network version of SP2 (like what Blue said), but would add to that suggestion [after rebooting] you reinstall the drivers, in particular [at least] the motherboard drivers [not uninstall any drivers, just reinstall the drivers after the reboot]. I hope this suggestion helps.
Yes, I do, I really do. I tried to follow that advice when you mentioned it with regards to Nortons (I now have AVG Free and it is doing just fine, thanks for the heads-up) but do u think Windows Update is working for me? Not a chance.
When you remove Norton's it takes part of SP2 with it. The part that allows windows update to work. You have to go to the Microsoft site and find the full network version or SP2, download it, and install it.
Also, when you go to windowsupdate, you should select to install critical updates, not choose the automatic option. * This way, you will be prompted to install the windows installer 3.1 update, the BITS update, and maybe one or two other updates. Then, you can get a list of critical update downloads.
Yup, remember you saying that bit too - though I didn't remove Norton's, just hacked the registry to stop it working. Anyways I managed to fiddle services.msc enough to get the damn update thing working, hopefully life will b better in 26 minutes. Thanks for your good advice Blue. Anyways lets get this party back on track. Any feedback from the .dll?
I ended up having to totally uninstall SP2 plus all updates related to it in Add/Remove programs. That cured the problem but I was desperate
Back to Spellslinger's request for .dll fixes: How about putting in a new RNG - possibly the re-vamped twister that came out after they noticed it gave too many results that were near-identical? (And doesn't that sound like exactly what would cause most of the results that we end up screaming at the screen for?) The ChangeLog.txt for patch 2 says the algorithim "can be easily replaced."
Ah, another fine thread got derailed by the center of our lovely hobby working in mysterious ways... :eyebrow: Hmm, so far there is not much feedback on the changes I've made. Does that mean everything works fine or has no one had the time to look into it? Wasn't there something about Spike's Legion?
I've sent out a PM on 07-23-06 requesting they test it; but no responses indicates to me that they have not done one or the other...(testing or replying). I s'pose they've either lost interest, or gone on to greater glory, or have troubles with their equipment. Sorry! Anyone else care to report findings?
Sorry Lord_Spike my INTERNET has been down for the last couple of days, should be able to test the new dll fixes tomorrow.(have to go to work in a hour.)
No sweat...you're doing the community a service that is much appreciated. And you're not the only one with comp probs.
