When I first played the PnP village of Hommlet module many many moons ago our first level party was hanging out around town. Being the party's thief I took it upon myself to see if I could redistribute some of the local wealth through the fine art of burglary. TO my shock and surprize I discovered a very hungry vampire in the cellar of one of the townies homes. My copy of the module has gone the way of the THAC0 and I was interested in finding out if there really was supposed to be a damned vampire in the basement or if my DM was just winging it to keep me from looting the entire town. Any input from current owners of the original module would aid me in berating an old friend for making me roll up a new char in the first session.
Berate away Sirian, the only references to Vampires in the module are a mention of them in a feasting room on level 3 (I think there are Ogres in that room in ToEE) and the illusion that was cast on price Thrommel to make him look like a Vampire. But in an effort to make you feel better, a DM friend of mine introduced a holy sword weilding Paladin (the sword could teleport without error twice a day) who had let the power of his sword go to his head (making him arrogant and wreakless), to a Predator (as in the film - invisbile alien, green blood, heat sensors and laser guns) to teach him a leason in humillity.
That makes me feel much better. I suppose I had it coming after I ran a game in which his nasty fighter(Drizzt ripoff) was mobbed by yetis with 100 hp each. Thanx guys.
Hardly seems fair; death by super-yeti is a perfectly legitimate way to end the aspirations of any angsty-drow-rip-off pc.
Whereas "vampire in the cellar to deal with first level thief" is ridiculously over-the-top. "See you at sun-up".
Personally I'd have been happy with a deadly trap I was unable to deactivate. He just had to be a jackass. My new character and the rest of the party fled the village soon after my former character attacked and killed one of the other players. We actually abandoned the Temple entirely to the DM's dismay and took up with a group of Renee we met along the river. Served the bastard right for unleashing vampires loose on 1st level PC's. Spike: In my opinion I was kind to allow his char to get to 5th level before slaughtering him out of disgust. I should have used 3 dozen yochlols.
Lots of low-level guys have taken out vampires; all you need is a stake, mallet & the correct knowledge of where it sleeps. I s'pose you'd send troublesome pc's to the neighbor's house for a *ahem* cup of sugar...?:mrhappy:
