I got it (while others may not)...just supporting your position, here...or at least trying to, since I agree with it.

the irony of the game is a LN cleric of hextor can be in the same party as a paladin, where the cleric can comit a number of foul deeds including commanding the undead and the paladin not bat an eyelid but otherthings are unexceptable. but thats what you get for not having a living, thinking DM to run the show.

@kalshane: We basically agree on everything except for
where I believe that statement is wrong. I'll just leave it at that and not pursue an argument.

    [EDIT]
    ****************************************
We both basically wrote the same thing using different wording.

Many years ago(25+) I played a Paladin and the DM expected a saintly, holy-roller dogooder because that was his impression of what a Paladin should be. His concept of what a Paladin should be and do was really strict and tight. To be a Paladin and gain the benifits as such, then you must follow the rules/guidelines as set.

And as I said in another thread, the act and allowing or disallowing either by the paladin himself or the associates thereof should be based upon the diety involved. I reiterate here that a dwarven paladin of a dwarven diety would probably not have a problem with drinking or even possilby the drinking contest as drinking is an inherent part of dwarven culture. What one culture deems immoral, another does not. Prime example of this is that Christianity and Western Cultures would find it immoral to practice polygamy. However certain Eastern Cultures and religions of those areas not only don't have a problem with polygamy, but actually have their cultures ingrained with the idea. Yet, they may also consider themselves "lawful good".

Some would say that allowing a rogue to associate with a paladin to pick locks and remove traps would violate the paladin's ethics. Depends upon your point of view.

The only problem I see with the argument that it is up to the diety is that, Paladins are not required to have a diety. So for me that whole train of thought deteriorates from there.

The argument about cultures also seems moot. A paladin has a lust for both Law and for Good. This being said he would therefore be obliged to follow the laws and mores of the place where is was currently standing. If this drinking contest was taking place in a cavern run by dwarves then by all means your argument would hold true, but since it is taking place in Hommlet, it is the laws and social mores of that place that the paladin must honor. My feeling is that this would hold true, unless a place was inherently evil. In evil place a paladin would apply his own sense of wrong and right.

How can I speak as to the laws and mores of the village of Hommlet. I am glad you asked. In a game these decisions would be made by a DM, who would consult the module. So there is the path that I follow in my decision making when it comes to the computer rendering of the Gary Gygax module Temple of Elemental Evil, the defacto DM would have been Steve Cain, it was his love of the D&D and the original module that brought this version of the game to life. In an interview with Gary Gygax when asked what he thought of ToEE, is quoted as saying that Tim Cain was right on with his interpretation.

So IMHO Tim Cain is the defacto DM of ToEE and if he chose to make a paladin fall for a drinking contest in Hommlet then who am I to second guess him.

Ah Elmo what about Elmo then, well IIrc in the original module elmo was a 4th level ranger that was pretending to be drunk, to try to get past a parties natural defenses and evaluate thier intentions.

Re: CoE 4.0.0 mod question - Bugs

I noticed a few bugs when playing with the CoE 4.0.0 mod and the ToEE front-end:

    1) My dwarf wizard doesn't get his +2 racial bonus on his Appraise skill.

    2) I can repeatedly finish the Courtship of Eddie's Father quest and the Agent Revealed quest involving Burne, racking up tons of XP and gold, i.e. my logbook doesn't update completed quests.

    3) Similar to #2 above, when I'm doing the Nulb quests, the quests don't show up in my logbook.

    4) When I finish the quest that allows me to purchase masterwork weapons from Smyth in Hommlet, I can't purchase any more masterwork items if I buy one item, leave, and then come back. He always wants me to bring him another giant's head in order for him to show me his masterwork inventory.

    5) Not sure if this is a bug or is part of the storyline, but when I ask Furnok to leave my party, he immediately attacks the party.

    6) Not sure if this is a problem, but I made the brewmaster's apprentice (?) into a beggar when I told him incorrectly that his master would allow him to convert religions. The apprentice keeps standing in front of the inn and won't go away even after I give him gold. Plus, I can't seem to get rid of the Beggarmaker reputation even after I cleared out the moathouse and killed Lareth.

    7) Is there any way to loot the jeweler's and Jaroo's chests without causing them to attack you?

    8) Is there any way to kill Ramnos when he goes invisible and still leave a body to loot? He disappeared on me when I initiated combat.

Are there any solutions to these problems? I checked the thread of known problems and their solutions and only found a possible solution for #2 and #3, which I haven't had a chance to implement.

    1) Will check but probably a .dll hack needed so unfixable atm.

    2) Will check and fix if I can confirm (will just be a case of flags not being raised).

    3) Silly question - but you are clicking on the tab in the logbook to see the Nulb quests?

    4) Odd. Will check again but never had nor seen this problem.

    5) Quite possibly the NPC leave party bug. They turn aggressive. There's a recent thread about this. Have a look there. It might be fixable by the clever modders.

    6) Don't think this is a bug. Just a nasty consequence.

    7) Not that I know of. But then I usually play good parties who don't steal in plain sight of the owner ;)

    8) He'll appear again at a later date.

2,3&4 sound to me like the logbook isn't being updated, I don't suppose you have an NPC in the left most slot of your party pool do you?

    Re: CoE 4.0.0 mod question-bugs

Yeah, I checked the logbook. There's no Nulb tab showing up.

And, yes, I have Fruella in the leftmost slot. I will move her down the roster and see if that fixes the logbook updating bug.

    Thanks for the help.

    It will do.

Allyx - what is the cause of that? And I'm assuming it is a .dll hack to fix?

The cause of it is having Fruella as party leader - thats an abomination.

But its a well-known issue, people do it once (we all have), realise the problem and don't do it again. I don't think we need to try and fix it, even if we could (which I doubt, even if we had a dll hacker). The party leader most clearly represents the player, and the game is geared that way.
