I started the game with a lawful evil monk...when i leveled i took a sorcerer level. when i leveled again it wouldn't let me up my monk class, i thought it a fluke and kept playing, now at my fourth level i still can't take the monk class, whats up? is it a class restriction that you can't multi with a monk? or is it that i took a familiar or what? (half elf LE monk 1 sorc 2)
That's your problem right there. It explicitily states in the manual that once a Monk multiclasses, he/she CANNOT return to take Monk classes ever again. The same is true of Paladins. Once you leave either of these classes, you cannot return to them.
oh shit... damn, 5 dollar bargain bin w/ no manual! *sigh* whats a good 3rd class then...? I wanted to improve upon my characters melee attacks, prefereably his unarmed but not necesseraly.
The manual is in PDF format on the disc.... I have that same version myself. As for the character, if you have a saved game from before this, just reload and continue from there as a monk, then switch to sorcerer. As for additional classes, you'll have to let us know what race and stats you have. Otherwise, suggesting a class would be pointless.
How have you patched your ToEE game? It should be ToEE game + Atari Patch1 and Patch2 + Co8 4 MOD. Do not use Atari Patch3. If you have used Patch3, reinstall Patch2. Then install Co8 4 MOD. Hopefully, that helps you with the issue.
If you take a third level you'll start taking an EXP penatly eventually. Since you can't level Monk anymore your levels would get too far apart, and that character would start falling behind the rest of the party. On the other hand, since your only 4th level you could remove that character and add a new monk. You wouldn't really be losing much that a little monster killing wouldn't remedy.
He's currently only Monk 1 / Sorcerer 2. He can start a new class as a half-elf without XP penalties at all. Even if he keeps going on in the new class he will be fine as long as he doesn't return to Sorcerer (he cannot return to Monk as per the 3.5 rules). Thus, if he went fighter for the high BAB and Hit Points, he'd be able to retain the use of the open hand attacks without getting hit by either the XP penalty or the AoO penalty for no weapon (he's still a monk). He has other options too, but we'd need to know his stats to help out more.
It's not a bug and won't be resolved with the above solution. The following is directly from both the ToEE manual and the AD&D 3.5 rules: "Like a member of any other class, a monk may be a multiclass character, but multiclass monks face a special restriction. A monk who gains a new class or (if already multiclass) raises another class by a level may never again raise her monk level, though she retains all her monk abilities." Paladins have the same restrictions.
