Am I the only one who is disturbed by the fact that this documentation STILL implies that Orion was the one who created "34 new spells... including Tenser's Transformation..."? Um, I know who I was playtesting those for and it weren't Jim-Bob. --Blair "Fly, you fools!"
@Blue - Everything looks good to me. Good job. @Ted - My operational idea with regard to Orion's readmes was that only text that was actually composed by him should appear in them. More specifically, I wanted to terminate the erroneous impression that was given by his cut & paste job of large tracts of text from various Co8 sources in READ ME 3, that impression being that HE was responsible for all that modding. It so happens that there was not one word of original Orion text within READ ME 3 as near as I can tell (and normally Orion language is recognizable from miles away), so I elimnated everything but the section headings, which are harmless enough by themselves. Our purpose after all was not to fundamentally change Orion's mod or attachments, just to make them comply with our requirements. So if he wants to have blank readmes included with his mod, more power to him. That, or actually do some work and write the damn things himself. Also - I think the added Co8 disclaimers in his readmes, plus the addition of the Co8 readme, should clear up any confusion on the part of unsuspecting players. :biggergri @Blair - With regard to the spells claim, I had worried over this before myself, but it is my understanding that Orion actually did do some new spells, some of which were duplicates (in name only) of spells that Darmagon did. Do they work? God only knows, although my money's not on that possibility. The likelihood that there is some plagiarism going on here, in the area of spells and who knows where else, seems very high to me. But with a few exceptions, most members have expressed that they are not so much concerned with the theft of their original material as they are with the damage to Co8's reputation that the existance of Orion's mod could cause. Hopefully, Blue's new package and the associated documentation will clear that up.
As long as the readme files state something to the extent.. "(1) Co8 makes, extensively tests and fixes its MODs, properly - it's the Co8 standard and code of honor. (2) Co8 is not the producer of and Co8 is also likewise not responsible for the cause of any Crash-To-Desktops experienced by copying the Orion79 MOD overtop of any Co8 MOD. In such event of any CTD, contact Orion79."
@Blair: As far as the spells go, I've had a look at both the ones Darmagon did and the ones 0rion did, and about they only thing they share in common is the name. I don't think that 0rion stole anything from Darmagon, and it shows in the poor execution of his spells. If he had, they would work better. @Everyone: I am going to fire off a email to 0rion, telling him that his mod is down at Sorcerer's again, and what we have done, and that he needs to contact us here if he has any objections. I will give him one week, and if we haven't heard from him in that time, I will ask Tal to mirror the package I put together on Sorcerer's Place. That being said, and I'm not asking anyone to do this, but if someone who has played 0rion's Mod before felt like testing out the package I put together, and found that my spitting it up broke something, I would be willing to listen. I'm not talking about things that were already broken with the mod, just new things my splitting it has caused. Mind you, this is just the perfectionist in me talking.
Will wonders never cease. This is from 0rion: I have to admit, I never expected this. It looks like we have the go ahead from 0rion. What does the community say? Should we give Tal the go ahead to mirror 0rion's mod? I'm going to ask Tal to send me the original description 0rion used. I feel maybe some of it can be used in the final one.
Agetian here, from Sapricon's office (and from hence logged in as Sapricon). Yeah, this answer was kinda unexpected, but it's a better outcome than I originally expected. I'd say that the reviewed version of the mod, with a new description and a new set of READMEs, and separated content, is OK to be uploaded to Sorcerers. However, I'd recommend that Tal is informed that the mod should be located at a position below Co8 4.0.0 official mod. - Agetian, from Sapricon's office.
maybe even half-way down toward the bottom of the list on the ToEE downloads page with the Co8 4 MODs at the top!.. *smirk*
Mirror it, slam the lid on it, and let's be done with this farce. And I assume we won't be offering any further updates to the base install. May it join the ranks of Vicks & Wedge. Having been down this road with Orion too many times, I'm never going to consider anything he says as real and true again. Sorry.
I sent a PM to Tal and told him the situation is resolved, and asked him to mirror the versions I posted. I think we can finally put this behind us. Let us speak of it, and 0rion, no more.
I just checked sorcerers.net and orions mod was not posted or linked. (12:15 AM after midnight Wednesday - April 19, 2006)
For any who are interested, 0rion's mod is up at Sorceror's Place with the following disclaimer: There are both the Toffee and non-Toffee versions, and its in two parts, the Co8 base and 0rion's own efforts. Tal runs a smooth ship. Well done C-Blue, Gaear and everyone who contributed to dealing with this issue. Now I suggest we never speak of it again.
:imwithstu and could someone cast the mind wipe spell on me please? No not the one they cast on poor Bing, the other one, I do at least want to be able to speak coherantly afterwards. Kudos to all that helped end this whole messy business... <Zap> What was I saying?
