    Hey guys,

I'm revisiting TOEE on a newly built system. It's an AMD 3500+ overclocked with a NVidia Gefore 6600gt. It's running XP Pro SP2 and DirectX 9.0c. I was using 77.72 Forceware for the vid car but just recently upgraded to the latest.

I installed TOEE, then Official Patches 1 and 2, then the CO8 mod patch as recommended in many places in this forum. I then put in some custom portraits for my party. I've been using front end to get into the game for the most part, but I've also tried the regular way.

My problem is as follows: I'm getting random freezes at intervals of about every 5-30 minutes during gameplay. They seem to be concentrated during combat, but I've gotten one during character generation. Basically the game freezes and the sound stops, I cant CNTRL ALT DLT or escape to windows; I have to press the computer reset button. Sometimes, if I've just saved the game before it freezes that save file becomes corrupted, but this isn't always the case. I've tried adjusting DirectX sound accelleration settings (I'm using a USB SBLive card so that might be a problem, but I have the latest drivers for it), changing the video card drivers, and adjusting numerous settings within the game such as anti-aliasing, gloss mapping etc. Nothing seems to solve the problem.

Any suggestions before I abandon all hope?

    Thanks for your time all,

    -Xander "the Wise"

I had similar problems. Believe it or not, turning down the overclocking fixed them. There is some evidence suggesting the game works better with a lower front side bus speed. Don't ask me why, but it does.

Looks like that might have been the trick. I'll report back if I run into problems further down the road.

    Thanks!

Hey- I need to know about that TED!! My buddy who gave me this system says it was originally a 1.53-- but it is reading a 1.15-- he says because the clock speed got messed up somehow.

    How would I fix that?

You fix it in the BIOS. When you boot up the computer, while it is doing the memory test, at the bottom of the screen it will say something like "Press F1 to enter help. Press DELETE to enter setup." You want to enter setup. If you have a splash screen on boot up, delete is usually the default key to enter setup. Once there, well, I leave it to you to figure out what to do. There is some good information on adjusting the BIOS on the internet. But be warned, changing your BIOS settings can totally mess up your computer, to the point that it won't even boot up. There is a fix for that as well, but it involves opening up the tower, removing the CMOS battery, and shorting out the battery socket (i.e. bridge the connectors for the positive and negative battery connections). This will reset the BIOS to the default configuration.

My rig reads the bus speed wrong ( I found a way to fix this by updating bios...but I'm too lazy and since it doesn't mess anything up...did I mention I'm lazy?!)

Sometimes, especially on older systems, if you just ground the reset pin with the CMOS battery still in place, it won't reset the BIOS, since the battery is still supplying voltage.
