Hello, I've been playing ToEE now and then since 2003 or something like that (fairly early vanilla), but I've recently decided to mod the game (Co8 8.1 and Temple+ a few weeks later on). Several nice fixes - but I still have crashes... Many of them involve the nice prestige class Ultimate Magus (my favorite prestige class together with Mystic Theurge and Dwarven Defender)... Sometimes my game crashes when I take the second level of Ultimate Magus, especially if I level as C-W-Wm-W-W - UltiM x2. Not always, but often... I've also had a weird crash when learning a new L1 Wiz spell from a scroll. I'm not sure, but it might be linked to learning the 16th L1 Wiz spell from a scroll. I could learn 17 L1 Wiz spells if I knew 15 when taking my 2nd Wiz level, but the game still crashed once I had memorised spells and rested. (At that point the game crashed if I opened any inventory or checked the map.) There also seems to be some chance luck needed if you take levels in both Ultimate Magus and Mystic Theurge, as my game seems to be much more eager to crash when I level up a toon that has both these classes. Mystic Theurge usually works pretty well (except if you try to level as a Favoured soul and Warmage), but not in combination with Ultimate Magus (unfortunately). Abjugant Champion L5 doesn't seem to trigger the "CL = BaB" effect, at least not when it comes to number of spells or possible feats (so no forge ring as F9-W1-AbjC5, even thoug CL should be 14). I haven't really tried much, but I used the console to give all my toons enough xp to level to L30 just to try out a few different setups. I saved, quit the game and restarted the computer after using the console. I'm not entirely sure, but it feels like the game is much more instable if you get too high as a Wiz. Are there any particular spells that I ought to avoid learning or memorising? Sometimes the game crashes at a random level-up, sometimes when closing the inventory and sometimes when using the map. I've realised that I need to save before I level up (so I always level up in the wilderness, usually at Emridy or outside the Moat), then level, memorise, rest (until the new spells are active) and use the map before I do anything more (before saving, even) - because if I was able to use the map after those steps then the level-up was a safe one and the game will work until the next level-up. After L20 taking a new level seems much more risky, so I wonder if it's even worth planing for a toon above L20. I've downloaded KotB, but I'd like to know if I'll experience the same problem in that game as well (it's the same engine, so my guess is that I will). I don't really need to go as high as 20 in ToEE, but it would be nice to have that possibility in KotB since I don't know the story in advance (and I usually prefer having slightly overbumped toons on unknown stories). Any thoughts on this?
Thanks! Yes, KotB really looks interesting. I'd just like to know what bugs I need to expect there, so I know what party to bring (and how those classes will need to be levelled). I'd hate to realise that one of the toons can't take his 7th level due to the Ultimate Magus level-up crash. After all - a toon becoming Ultimate Magus needs to sacrifice quite a bit of other stuff, so being forced to take another direction at 7th level is tough (the toon only starts getting really good around L10, so going in another direction at L7 is like having a slow-levelling L1 toon).
Personally I had very few crashes during my KotB runs. I also didn't encountered any similar to yours crushes or bugs, like the Ultimate Magus or the Abjurant Champion ones.
To reiterate: I generally haven't run upon a UM or AC bug/crush in any version of the game, not only KotB. KotB will not fix any issues you have encountered with some classes. Edit: Still worth to play it, even with other classes. KotB could be a genuine paid DLC for moderns times.
Please take note that KotB is made for lower class characters. If you are planning to simply up your XP/level then the game will just be a walk-thru and may not be much fun.
Are the UM crashes related to your L30 character? Honestly that kind of level is not well tested, and you shouldn't be able to go that high in a normal playthrough (I think 21-22 is the highest, and that's with a solo character). For KotB i think the usual endgame level is 6, 7 tops.
Soloing KotB will likely max you at level 8-10. Expect a lower level with a bigger party unless you grind or EXP edit.
Not really that way, no. But when I run into problems I usually go for a bunch of rests in the wild to gain enough xp to handle the situation. Having no idea of how long KotB is I prefer planning char progressions up to L15. Oh - it's THAT short? In that case the issues with the pretige classes shouldn't really be any problem.
Oh, that sounds nice! Dialogs and puzzles, I guess. Thanks for the info, Ted! No hurry, Doug. Knowing that the issues will be checked is the most important thing, and that there might be some kind of fix in a patch in a year or so. I mean - I survived buggy vanilla for a long time.....
