    1) i just can't understand some aspects of identifing items - in bg/id everything is clear - some money OR spell by your wizard, and the item is identified... but here we have much more interesting choices: some money (100GP) OR spell by your wizard PLUS the same money of 100GP - fantastic, i was deeply impressed by this invention of the Creators... can somebody explain me what means all this?.. (damn, i've spent space for spell of level 1 on that 'identify' and now it turned out to be useless...)
2)can someone tell me what opens the 'Chime Of Opening' - it says something about portals, but i don't quite understand what it could do.... by the way, it costs 1 CP - is it really useless? (i stealed it from Burne) (actually, i just got the long_description.mes file, maybe it contains the description of it, so sorry if it does)
3)another stupid question, but anyway: wands, i never used them in bg, but here i think it could be useful - so, what means 5 charges? 5 charges per day or 5 charges at all? if "at all", then how it can be recharged?

thnx for Your help in advance

    damn...
    {A Chime of Opening allows he owner to cast Knock, it has 10 charges}
    sorry, just found
anyway - what means "target is not a portal"? or by portals they call doors and locks?..

    1. The identify spell has a material component cost of 100 gold (specifically you have to crush a diamond worth one hundred gold) but if you are out in the dungeon or wilderness and don't want to wait to find out what it is, you gots
to have the identify spell and at least 100 gp for each item you cast it on.

    2. You should be able to activate the chime of opening from the radial arm menu when you click on your character and what it does is open locked doors and chests. I don't remember what dc it actually functions at off hand. sorry. :sadblinky

    3. wands are very usefull in toee. when all the charges are used, the wand disappears from your inventory (crumbles to dust), and most wands can't be
recharged, but they are easy and cheap to make.

oh, ok, another one: spell Knock tries to open the lock... ok, but what 'Open lock' skill is it equal? i.e. how big the 'open lock' must have my rogue, so That thing becomes useless?

Good question: I don't know the answer. A knock spell should open any non-
magic resistant lock or door. It may or may not set off any trap that's on it.
I don't think it ever becomes useless although your thief may become so good
that it's not neccessary to carry it as a spell. I usually have my mage make a
couple of scrolls of knock...just in case... and then use my spell slots for attack
spells. The thief can do the total package though... disarm traps, pick locks,
and generally skulk about if neccessary.

...and the last thing: in bg high-level wizards and (i suppose) clerics could identify a lot of well-known items without casting... any chances here?...

A long time ago someone created a mod that turned "identify" into mass identify, although I don't think it would work with todays standard mods (if its even around anymore). I thought the idea was a good one, unfortunately it didn't cost 100 gp for each item, so it was too unbalancing to use. If you don't want to pay to id items just throw in a wand of identify through the console, or give yourself a bunch of platinum and have a merchant do it. If your using the co8 mod "read magic" will identify scrolls and potions for free.

The 100gp cost for identify is part of the official 3.5 D&D rules, so please stop blaming the creators. If anything, you should thank them for making humble shop owners capable of casting the spell in the first place (that's for your convenience), and for only charging you 100gp when they do it. The spell's cost is meant to be painful, so that you really manage your resources wisely. The properties of many items can be determined by equiping/using them anyway. On top of that, you can get around spending the 100 gp in a couple ways in ToEE, if you like:

    1. Depending on your mod, you can create a wand of identify with around 20 charges that only costs around 360 gold and 20 xp. Use 19 charges, then turn around and sell it for 650 gp or so. You'll actually make money on the deal. This is cheating, though, whatever you think you're entitled to.

    2. Again, depending on the mod, you can use the 0-level (and free) spell "read magic" to identify both potions and scrolls. Since most of what you'll identify falls into these two categories, it'll save you lots of money.

BTW, for a list of rules that's really easy to follow, here's a link to the official D&D 3.5 rules:

I always craft a helm of reading magic at the first available oppertunity, stops all that resting/swapping all 0 level spells to read magic, and generally saves time and effort.

Damn I loved that little thing... even if it still charged 100gp per (which it didn't, it 'cheated') I would still have loved it so u could mass identify everything. Just such a damn pain doing it one at a time if u have been off on a big adventure and have a load of stuff.

I take it that's a little craft wonderous that's been added in co8? Mayhaps is there a give number for it?

Edit: Heh, just saw your thread on the adjustment to Drifter's fix. So I guess this is your personal addition, not co8's?

When in doubt-cheat. Go into the console and type give 12238 and get a Wand of Identify. End of problem.

No it's not one of mine, but it is one of my favourite items, it was given the great helm icon, but the plumed helm animation - so I fixed that.

Oh and the give # is 6294
