Okay, I'm on the second level of the Temple, clearing out the Fire Temple area. I've picked up two rings of fire protection and I have them equipped on my cleric and my fighter. I decide to go in the large area there and taking on the two Salamanders, half dozen flamebrothers, and the fire priest.

In my first attempt, my party got pretty well wiped out by the Salamanders throwing Fireballs, except for my cleric and fighter did all right. I reloaded and kept everyone else at the very back, figuring they can throw magic missles and ranged attacks by the doors so they'd be out of range of the fireballs, while the cleric and fighter run in. No such luck, they were the first targets for the Salamanders fireballs.

    Reload.

This time i figure that my fighter and cleric are doing awesome in there. I'll see if they can handle it totally alone, and just keep the rest of my party back inside the hall, around the bend.

First fireball launched hits them dead on.

    Reload.

I keep the entire party DOWN A DIFFERENT HALLWAY not even NEAR the battle, with about six turns just to get to the room the salamanders are in. THERE! No way there's line of sight there. Fighter and Cleric rush in....

I kinda stared as the salamanders launched fireballs across the entire temple to hit the main group who are all standing in a completely different room several screens away.

    ...

    Whiskey.
    Tango.
    Foxtrot?

I'd love to see this on the "to do" list in an upcoming mod. It makes sense that enemies should have to have line of sight to cast any spells, let alone stay within that spells range limitations.

They may be targetting a specific character (your wizard for instance). Buff him with protection from this and that and scatter your characters so they can't all get hit at once.

Or use silence on the salamanders, shouldn't affect them but it did last time I was in there.

Yeah, I had that happen too Ravenot, but it was in the Falrinth fight. I was staying away from him to avoid that bug he has, just waiting him out and letting him use up all his spells, and bam!, fireballs start flying hither and yon. My people screamed in fear, pain, and outrage, their robes and cloaks singed and smoldering in the dank air of the dungeon as they fled. :nervous:

When Falrinth finally went down I searched him twice over for the magic slide-rule I felt he must possess, but none was ever found.

    Like you I thought:

    William.
    Tom.
    Frank?

Definitely should be on the to-do list.

Well, i slaughtered them all like little piggies, I just had to wait a few fights until my group leveled up to level 7 so my wizard could get Lesser Globe of Invulnerability. I just grouped them all up in the back, cast that, then sat them there as the Fireballs bounced off while my cleric and fighter waded into them.

Man, Whirlwind attack is the best feat EVAR.

But regardless, it wasn't the fact I was having difficulty getting past the encounter, it's the fact that the enemy can cast spells without regard to line of sight or spell range. It seems like it *should* be easy to fix, since PC's are bound by that for their own spells. Just find that code and plug it in for the enemies as well.

This problem was best illustrated before the npc cone area of effect fix came in. the problem is that the game make monsters and npc's cast thier spells FROM the character they're casting at instead of from the Npc (eg monster casts cone of cold, cone starts FROM the targeted creature, and extends TOWARDS the monster that cast it!). I guess this is why troika had spell casters only cast bless, bane, prayer and other buffs!

It amazes me to no end that this game was released in this state. Not only buggy, but this seems really kinda.. patched together. Troika should have been ashamed.

    *headshake*

So anyways, you know if it looks like it's fixable? That does sound kinda hefty to fix.

such weakness saddens me... your characters should just curl up into a ball and die.

if you cant kill something then find things you can kill, such as commoners and the odd random troll.

    Uhh... what?

Dude, did you *read* the thread? That's entirely not what this thread is about. If you're not going to bother to read the thread, then please don't bother to reply.
