The best thing about Liv's work is that it adds NEW and different content to the game. Most of the stuff before was fixing bugs. The game sorely needs NEW content, it's old and stale and so repetitive. Fireballing bugbears is fun but it gets old quick. I always hated the looting issue, but I would much prefer NEW content and just deal with the looting thing.

Enough already on this one. We're a community who praise fairly and offer constructive feedback in the appropriate places.

Nice work Drifter, and I can only doff the proverbial cap to anyone able to play with the coding as you are doing.

I only reasumed the thought of many people here and I gave a suggestion. What's wrong with that?
And anyway, I would enjoy to play BOTH at the same time: Liv additions with freedom offered by Drifter's. Since it looks like that Drifter's hack forbids the player from playing Liv's mini quests & stuff related to NPCs, then that's why I think that an integration would be better because I think that Drifter's solution is the one that mini/maxes the result: minimizes the harm and maximizes the benefits both in therms of role-playing, reality and functionality.
If they were compatibile, there wouldn't be any problem at all.

0rion79: It's not so much what you said, it's how you said it. Even if you may not realise it, your post sounded slightly aggressive. So please choose your words more carefully next time.

Now if Liv would come forward and tell us how exactly Drifter's patch screws up the NPCs, maybe he could do something about it and fix that problem. And everyone would be happy! ;)

Oh, I see the point. I apologize then: sometimes it is hard to express some concepts in a foreign language.

You bet! Don't you worry, when we have a few drinks, all languages are equally foreign to us.

Is there a version of this patch that will work with Official Patch 3?

The general consenus is don't bother with patch 3. Patch up to co8-3.0.4 and temple.dll. If you play Liv1.5 you may lose some triggers and dialogue for some of the mini-quests and other stuff. It's up to you but don't use patch 3.

But what if I already have, and am mid-game? I'd hate to lose my saves, and I've been having trouble when uninstalling/reinstalling the game (see my "map bug?" thread, if you think you could help with *that* little issue). Is there any way to uninstall the patch and then install the co8 one? Also, i've been wondering about this...does the co8 patch change the game in any way? Or does it just fix bugs? 'Cause I really don't want any hacks or cheats, other than this NPC one, because I hate having my NPCs pick up items they can't use, and I can't equip them with better stuff since they're inventory is full of stuff.

    Thanks

Adding co8 after patch 3 causes even more problems. I hate to say it but a uninstall/re-install is the only and best way. There is a thread for this, but here it is. In this order, atari 1, atari 2, co8, and temple.dll. Then add Drifters mods. co8 and temple.dll fixes a whole bunch of things and adds some stuff. The game runs it's best with these mods. In the long run you'll be happier with the way the game runs with the mods.

I don't know why, but I installed the patch and it doesn't work. When I try to give some of the stuff the NPC's looted i get the information that "NPC will not drop that item". I have the 1. and 2. patch and fixes by moebius2778 installed. Is there anybody who knows what might be wrong?

co8 adds some things like masterwork items for the blacksmith in hommlet, etc., so if you want to play the game closer to the intent of the designers, you'll want to avoid it. I play patch 2, temple.zip (which fixes everything patch 3 does, plus a few other bugs), and this npc fix. Apply in that order. (Some recommend applying patch 1 before 2, and that certainly won't hurt. I haven't had a single problem without it, though.)

The best thing to do is to grab your save data from .../modules/ToEE/save and put them elsewhere, then uninstall the game and reinstall it fresh with the above patches, then reinsert the save folder. I'm not sure what patches you're running currently, so I don't know if your saves will be compatible with this setup, but I gather you're not running co8 or Liv, and if that's the case you should be fine.

Did you apply the patches in the right order? If, for instance, you apply moebius' temple.zip, it'll overwrite the change the npc patch made, and you'll have to reapply that. Also, when you ran it, did you get a message saying that it was successful or anything after you got the window and picked the temple.dll file and such?

Yes, first i applied patch 1, than patch 2, and than moebius' temple.zip and than the "humble NPC" patch. It said "patch successfull!" and i still can't take anything from the NPC's

I just got the game (got it for $10! I'm glad I waited!), and got to this thread doing a search on how people felt about _not_ using NPCs.

Well, now my eyes have been opened much wider!

I just wanted to share my first experience with NPCs, so that it might offer yet another perspective on this issue. Like I said, I just got the game, and this is my first experience with the NPCs in this game.

I allowed Elmo and Furnok to join my party. I went to Emirdy Meadows, defeated some skeletons, and then the trouble began. I tried several times to loot the bodies, but everytime a PC *moved* Furnok looted the bodies. When all was said and done, Furnok got something like 8 items (became encumbered) and my party of 5 (6 with Elmo) got 13 crossbow bolts, TOTAL!

WTF?! I stared at the screen, dumbfounded and absolutely pissed. I decided that none of my PCs in my True Neutral party needed to put up with such unbalance. So, I immediately killed Furnok. I'm not happy about this decision, but what choice do I have? Put up with constant bull like this? These weren't even terribly useful items for anybody, it's just the priciple! I feel like I've put up with so much already in this game, why can't I just be able to maintain party balance, even when someone joins my group? It's not like I could later trade items with Furnok to get some stuff that might be nice to have on someone else!

Suppose I was there for real. And I had an NPC cut in front of me to loot everything that I was about to examine myself, even to the point that the NPC overloaded himself and slowed down the party. Certainly I would have plenty of words for that person, and maybe even some steel for them as well!

I read this debate about Liv's mod (which I know little if anything about) and I do start to feel conflicted. I really want to experience as much as I can (I want more than just my $10's worth) and it sounds like Liv's mod is the way to do that. But, I can't possibly play a game where I have so little control. You can't turn to the NPC and say "If you continue to treat the party like this, you will find yourself at the wrong end of sword very soon". If I could, then I would. Othewise, Drifter's mod will be the only thing keeping more NPCs from dying suddenly!

What are the conflicts between those two mods?

    thanks
    jason.
