I just upgraded to the newest version and my wizard seems to be unable to copy the scrolls he has found into his spellbook (such as Ray of Enfeeblement). I have tried numerous times and keep getting the failure message, even after leveling up to 2nd and 3rd level. Is copy scroll now dependent on a skill?

Copying scrolls has always been dependent on the character's ranks in Spellcraft. If you fail once you should get an invalid action message until the next time you fail to copy another spell or when you level up - whichever occurs sooner.

In fact, if you fail to copy a spell into your spellbook, you won't be able to copy that spell untill you put more skillpoints into your spellcraft skill.

That's why I always save my game before I do such a thing. If my mage fails to copy the scroll, than I can just reload & retry.

Also, if you got a bard in your group, let him "inspire competence" on the mage for a +2 bonus. If you got a cleric, try enchanting your mage with "Guidance" for a +1 bonus. If your mage has "Foxes Cunning", that's good for an other +2 bonus. If you combine them all, you'll get a +5 bonus, as the bard gives a morale bonus, the cleric gives a competence bonus, while the mage gives an enhancement bonus, so it should all stack.

You buy the 'scribing' items from shop giving +2 each, stackable. I put these and merchant scales in Enchnated chest and bring out when needed. Look at Sprugnoir inventory.

I use F12/F9 reloads for this.

What about when "copy Scroll" simply doesn't show up at all? Is there a limit to the number of scrolls you can put in a spell book (per level)? Seems stupid, but programmers love to do stupid things.

If the copy scroll option does not even show up it means the scrolls in your inventory cannot be learned by that character. ig ... a wizard with a cleric scroll, or a specialist wizard trying to learn a scroll in a school that is prohibited by his specialization school.

Or you may have chosen to learn that spell when you leveled up and forgot that you already know it...

I've had difficulty with this as well. I have a level 1 wizard who was unable to "Copy Scroll" for an "Entangle" scroll. I got the scroll from the "Shop" map at the start of the module, but was never given an option to "Copy Scroll."

The wizard is a generalist with no deity, and the scroll did appear in the radial menu as castable. I could have cast the spell on the scroll, but only had an option to "Scribe Scroll" rather than "Copy Scroll." And "Entangle" is not in the wizard's spell book. His INT is 18, his spellcraft is at 4, but it's not a matter of "You failed to copy the scroll." Rather, it's that the "Copy Scroll" option never appears in the radial menu.

Am I doing something wrong here?

As you mentioned, Entangle isn't on the Wizard spell list, so you won't be able to copy it into your spell book. The error seems to be that it appears in the radial menu as castable when it shouldn't.

"Entangle" is a Druid spell, so you cannot copy it into a Wizard's sellbook.
And, Daryk, I'm afraid you are mistaking. The scroll correctly appear in the radial menu, is not an error. You can attempt to cast it , but you need to pass a dice roll ( don't remember details right now ) based on your Use Magic Device + Charisma. With a very high UMD rank, you can use almost every magical item, scroll, etc... As a matter of fact, my Rogue has always her UMD maxed out, so she can be a back up caster!!

Ah, I never use the "Use Magic Device" skill, so I didn't realize that's how it was implemented in ToEE. I would have thought it would show up in the skill section, not the inventory.

Ah, gotcha. I forgot that Entangle was druid-only. Or maybe I never knew it? I dunno. I have distant memories of 1e and 2e, but only played Baldur's Gate I and II past that. Gold Box games were more my era.
