    Hey all. Hopefully this is the right place for technical aid. If not, I apologize. I just joined hoping to get some help, as I've gone through all the crash suggestions and nothing is working! My problem is a little different: The game loads up fine, and I can get to the main menu. The 3D background starts panning normally, but then after about three seconds or so, a graphical glitch where black boxes randomly appear and obscure the options, and the screen freezes. The game remains functioning for a bit, as I can move the mouse (though not see where it is placed) and click things, but then five seconds later, I get the CTD. I have tried all the fixes listed in the various threads here, including but not limited to:

    -reinstalling both game and mod (at least a dozen times)
    -resolution change (both manually through config file and via frontend)
    -admin privileges
    -disabling visual themes
    -codec and driver updates
    etc

    I REALLY want to play this game, as there's no one in my town (that I know of) who has any interest in D&D. It's been years since I've been able to get a game going, so I just figured the videogame version would be the next best thing. Please, if you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

    Welcome to the forum! Please provide the basic information of your computer i.e. OS, video card, and your current monitor resolution. It might be a wine glitch or a video card problem, we'll never know until you provide those information. Thanks. Kindly wait for the forum moderators, they know the technicalities better than me so sit back and relax. If no one answers your question then no one knows the answer.

    Will do! Please don't make fun of my bad specs :( I'm using my laptop.

    Windows 7
    Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Chipset 3000
    1366x768
    DirectX 11

    Now, I know generally just having the basic chipset as opposed to a real video card is not great, but I just sort of assumed it would be able to handle ToEE as the game is over a decade old. Hell, this computer plays HL2 alright. I really hope that's not what it is.

    Thanks for the info! Try this.

    Locate ToEE.CFG in your game directory, open it using notepad and search for the ff. strings

    ---------------------
    video_width=1024
    video_height=768
    ---------------------

    I'm assuming your using a default resolution of 1360x768 in your Front-End. Since 1366x768 is not available in Front-End, let's replace "video_width=" content.

    ---------------------
    video_width=1366
    ---------------------

    Now save ToEE.CFG and your done! Re-run the Front-End again and click play. See if this remedies your problem. Once again, wait for the moderators' answer, since they know more than I do.

    Edit: I failed to read this line properly "-resolution change (both manually through config file and via frontend)." Please disregard my suggestion.

    Ha! Thanks for the suggestion, regardless. I did try it once more just to see, but yeah... still nothing.

    I run TOEE on a 10 years old athlon (single core) perfectly well so I doubt your problems come from a lack of performance of your pc.

    Here are a couple of suggestions :
    * run the game in xp compatibility mode
    * disable all graphical options (aa / 0 particles/ etc...)
    * change your resolution to your monitor's native one (if not already tried)
    * reinstall the game in a directory other than program files/..
    * maybe turn off some backround programs (mainly av)
    * disable software scaling (should be in windows video configuration), hardware scaling should be fine tho

    EDIT
    Sorry, not terribly tech savvy. How do I go about doing these two? I've tried all the other things you suggested.

    EDIT: Figured out the software scaling thing, but it also had no effect.

    If you can access the main game menu then just click on options / video.

    Uncheck everything there and lower particles down to 0.

    Just wondering tho, what version of toee are you using ? original cd ? GOG ? Is it patched ?

    Please provide a screenshot of your issue, so I can further help you with your problem. I have a proposal that will surely remedy your issue. Download dxwnd on SourceForge, there must be a DirectX issue/conflicts with your game, that's why your having such. I conclude.

    ::::::::
    DxWnd
    ::::::::

    Main Tab

    Check Hook Enabled
    Check Hook all DLLs

    DirectX Tab

    Tick DirectX9
    Check Suppress DX common errors
    Check Set AERO compatible mode

    Try putting a check on every DirectDraw Surface handling options. It's worth the try than never! Keep in mind, if none work on DirectX9 then tick "Automatic." Keep experimenting even the odds don't favour you, I wish for your success! Goodluck comrade!

    Make sure the Hook is set to Start

    You said earlier that you're not a tech type. So here's a preview of [must be] basic configuration for Main Tab.

    Final Instructions

    After you'd set it all, run the Front-End [dxwnd hook is important] click play button. The program will automatically hook with toee.exe. If Front-End interferes with the program then try launching the toee.exe alone.

    Can't get into the options menu. Well, I can, but the issue comes up before I can click on anything. It's like it happens after a set time limit, no matter what I click. I can start new game and get about as far as alignment selection, if I'm quick, or get into the options, but then it happens regardless.

    Actually, it's funny you should say that. When I first decided to post, I grabbed a screen cap to upload, but the boxes don't show up! In the screen, it looks as if everything is working fine. I'll try this hooks thing now. Fingers crossed!

    Tried DxWnd. No luck. Experimented in the dirextx tab, and nothing.

    This black box business sounds distinctly like a graphics card issue, unfortunately, which means a problem on your end only. Only thing I can think of to suggest is trying a very common resolution in TFE-X, like 1280 x 960. Or maybe even windowed mode.
