I seem to remember that the elves gave me a unicorn ring for rescuing the countess. Now it looks like I got a ring of freedom of movement instead?
I believe that the elven maiden will only reward you with the Unicorn Ring and Blue Elven Chain if you have a PC with a Good alignment (or maybe only if your party alignment is Good).
Are you positive? I don't see any modification to that in the files. You can verify by checking dialog file number 184 (elf maiden). She should be handing out item number 6126, which is the Unicorn Ring (hasn't changed either in the item definitions).
My NG party just received the Unicorn Ring in my latest play through. Personally, I think a ring of Freedom of movement is a better prize.
In my party ng. A non good party member ended up talking to the maiden. She didn't get it ether. I reloaded the game then my cg party face talked to her and he got it.
Hm. I received the Blue Elven Chain along with the non-unicorn ring, and I don't have a 00184* file between 00182assassin and 00185knight in data/dlg (that's where I was supposed to look, right?) I'm talking about NC 7.9, just to make that clear.
Well, that's the point - if there's no file there, it means it's not modded, so the file being used is the same one as vanilla ToEE (inside one of the .dat files). And looking at definition of the item referenced from that dialog, it hasn't changed either. It sounds like you didn't get ANY ring. Like others have said, you get the Elven chain if your party alignment is Good, and the ring if your talker PC in particular is Good.
