@ georgelappies: It's great to know that it works, thanks for testing! Glad I could help! I'll integrate this change into the upcoming update (v4.1) of TFE-X! Stay tuned for an official update here in this thread. ;)

UPDATE (08/08/13): The first post of this thread now contains download links to the latest stable and latest experimental (WIP) builds of TFE-X. Version 4.0.1 Beta is released. This version is the first step towards v4.1 maintenance update for TFE-X and contains improvements for the game startup procedure that should help avoid potential issues with launching the game on certain systems that prohibit launching Windows binaries (e.g. toee.exe) directly and require an explicit Wine call (e.g. certain Linux distros such as OpenSUSE). There are no other changes as of yet. You are not required to upgrade if you don't have any issues with TFE-X v4.0 related to the game not starting correctly, but your assistance in testing this experimental build is welcome since your testing (on all platforms - Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X alike) will speed up the release of the upcoming maintenance build of TFE-X. Thank you.

IMPORTANT: From this point on, when reporting bugs and issues with TFE-X, please make it explicit which version of TFE-X (stable or experimental) you are using.

Not even sure with what i should begin  so first my config... :
    java version "1.7.0_40"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.4.1) (ArchLinux build 7.u40_2.4.1-1-x86_64)
an my OS is a 3.10.4-1 kernel x86_64 (64 bit) with XFCE as a DE and X.Org: 1.14.2 nouveau driver using GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on a Mesa 9.1.5
What goes wrong for me : TFE-X.sh was unable to lunch my toee, after using yr experimental patch it succeeded to lunch toee.exe but here come the 'funny parts' :
1)in full screen mode my keyboard doesn't seem to work at all
2)strange graphic effects on begining shop map: the first 2 chest are pure white colored glow and so are any of my chars that go near those chests (from what i can tell they get rendered incorrectly when they go behind some object(wall in this case ?)
Worth saying that in windowed mode my keyboard works normal with toee.exe but the 'graphic glitch' remains
PS:none of the 2 problems i mention above are present in co8mod ver 7.8 or prior to it so its without a doubt smth specific only to ver 7.9 and its jre 'friend'
If theres any more info i can provide u with pls let me know....
PPS: http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/screenshotc740f02d8c76688ab4b01b97ee444fa5.php a print screen of the graphic glitch (pls note the first 2 chests and a ghostly halforc beside 1 of them)

@ Ank: This is a strange glitch. TFE-X is merely a game launcher and option manager, it neither does anything while the game is running nor has any control over what's going ingame, including the rendering process, so the latter issues are actually less likely to be TFE-X related. Pieces of the DLL have changed since v7.8.0 (some UI modifications were implemented, too), so it's more likely that you're having issues related to some of the new implemented features rather than the game launcher, but, of course, you never know. The said issues, at least the one related to the visual artifacts, can also potentially be related to using the nouveau driver which, unfortunately, is not quite up to the level of the proprietary driver in 3D rendering speed and compatibility... Still, to try and understand what's going on that's troubling you, can you please test the following: 1) in full screen mode, is it possible to switch to another app using the keyboard (alt-tab) or does that not work as well? If it is possible, does switching back to ToEE make the keyboard responsive?; 2) if you launch the game directly (without the front-end) by calling toee.exe, do you still have the glitch (in particular, is the keyboard responsive immediately or not)? 3) If you switch to a proprietary nvidia driver and try launching the game (with TFE-X), do you still have the glitch (especially the one with the objects not rendered correctly)?
P.S. Also, what is your version of Wine?
P.P.S. I'm unable to reproduce these issues on 64-bit Arch Linux with the same kernel version as you mentioned with KDE as DE and a proprietary nvidia driver (build 325.08). :\

P.S. The experimental fix that fixes the game startup on certain Linux distros is incorporated into a new stable build (v4.1). ;)

UPDATE (08/09/13): A new stable build (v4.1) is released. This is a maintenance release.
    * Improved the game startup routine so that it doesn't fail on some Linux distros that require an explicit Wine call to launch the game successfully.
    * Performed some source code cleanup and maintenance.

Well i ow u big time for those tips Agetian
Soo based on 1&2 i found out that for some reason thunar considered it should get the keyboard while toee got left with only the mouse :dizzy: (the 'alt-tabing switch-back' trick worked nicely)
And then based on yr PS question i did some digin and realized i was using wine 1.3.27 to run my toee and that instantly raised my 'wtf flag' ... after some research i found out i was using it because of winehq's gold rating
for 1.3.x branch regarding toee&co8mod packs ; naturally upon switching the wine to my sys version(1.7.0) the glitch went away and as an added bonus toee also compleetly lost the map slight scrolling lag and got a big frame rate boost :)

PS as far as the nouveau drivers go i pretty much share linus torvalds 'nvidia f u' opinion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVpOyKCNZYw ) as i got countless headaches over the time because of nvidia's proprietary drives ranging from 'booting up to command line mode' all the way to random freezes and unexpected system lockups during games. True enough the nouveau drivers don't even come close to giving u the max performance for yr hardware but theyr 'rock solid' stable and in most circumstances provide more then adequate gaming support(especially on an arch system that is bloatware free and gets updated at an alarmingly fast rate)

@ Ank: Glad I was able to help and glad you're now able to have a smooth experience with the game! I completely agree with you about nouveau vs. proprietary drivers, by the way - it's very unfortunate that the free driver is not quite up to speed yet, but personally I believe that eventually it will be comparable in both performance and features to the proprietary one. Btw, I'm also trying to free myself as much as possible from proprietary operating systems and their components, so far only few components are left that I have to use from the proprietary world. :) Good luck with ToEE and let me know if you run into any other issues!

Having a CTD issue I thought it best to do a complete re-install of everything TOEE related.

    1. I have deleted everything and emptied the "trash bin".
    2. Installed TOEE from my GoG library.
    3. Installed Front End X.
    4. Unzipped 7.9.0NC into the TOEE directory.
    5. Fired up Front End X, (4.0)
    6. Attempted to activate 7.9.0NC
    7. Received the following message;

Front End X encountered a serious error. ID exception when building a package:ZIP file must have at least one entry.

Here's the text from the log file. I'd upload the log.lck but the site will not allow it.

Can you open 'Circle of Eight Modpack 7.9.0 NC.tfm' in your ToEE root directory and see if it's empty? It will open with WinRAR or 7-Zip or WinZip, etc.

Yes I can and it has a few different folders and such in it.

What should I be looking for?

    EDIT: It has the following items in it;

    data folder 8/4/2013
    modules folder 8/4/2013
    temple.dll 6,881,280
    toee.exe

I guess that's a question for Agetian. I was mainly interested in the 'ZIP file must have at least one entry' thing, but it looks like the archive is populated.

@ sirchet: This is the strangest thing I've seen thus far. Please give me some time for testing, I can't reproduce it yet but I'll look into it. Just to get these things out of the way: 1) are you running TFE-X as an administrator? 2) what is the absolute location of your ToEE installation? 3) is UAC enabled on your Windows 7 or not?

EDIT: Tested for a while on my Windows 7 64-bit installation, with both TFE-X v4.0 that shipped with Co8 v7.9.0 and TFE-X v4.1 which is the latest stable build. Can't reproduce the problem no matter what I'm doing - I even tried running TFE-X without administrative privileges with UAC turned on - the front-end was unable to start the game under these circumstances due to the lack of access privileges but it was still able to inspect the module package for v7.9.0 NC and offered to activate it. :\ Judging by what exactly is failing for you and judging by the information about why it can fail from the JDK, unless it's some kind of a physical defect of the file (e.g. a damaged Co8 7.9.0 archive?), it's a file access error which is most likely happening due to some funky access rights denial from Windows - basically, Windows is not letting TFE-X read the contents of the module archive. This only makes me more interested in hearing the answers to those three questions I posed above... If all else fails, can you please try the following:

    1) Reinstall ToEE to some location that Windows is not considering a system location (e.g. C:\Games instead of anything like Program Files or some such places that Windows is super protective about).
    2) Make sure you're running TFE-X with administrative rights.

Hope this helps. If not, please tell me the details I inquired about above, I'll see what else I can do. ;)

    OK,

I am running as admin, right clicked went to properties then compatability and placed a check in the box for "always run as admin".

DPI scaling for high resolutions is turned of in properties also.

The game is installed in c: Games

    UAC is turned off.

    Running Win7 64 bit.

nVidia graphics processor with scaling turned off.

I will re-download 7.9.0NC and see if maybe I have a bad file, but when I open it as Gaear asked everything was there.

Btw, I have updated Java a while back during 7.8 to version 7 runtime environment.

EDIT: I have re-downloaded the modpack and am getting the same error message.

I opened UAC in the control panel and checked to make sure it is disabled and checked my log in rights, it says sirchet ... Administrator.

I do believe I am stumped.

EDIT EDIT: I have re-inserted 7.8 into TOEE and when I open the front end it looks like the older version.
I am currently in the activation process with 7.8NC.
