Lareth's ring - & WEB spell discussion EDIT: Go down a few posts for discussion of WEB spell. After killing Lareth, I picked up his (magical?) Ring. There was no indication as to what exactly it's powers are, and I am not able to use Identify on it. When equipped, no indication shows up on my character portrait. However, the Magic Items list @ atariforums says that it is a ring of freedom of movement. Is that true - if so, how do I check it out. And are most of the magic items in this game "undescribed" like this one? One wonders why you would pay 100gp to have something identified but aren't told of its powers... edit: Also, it's only worth 61gp at most merchants which is why I didn't think it had any powers...
Something is wrong here. Identify and then shift click and you should get a description. It is worth a couple thousand gp when identified. ALWAYS identify any magical item to get it's max value.I always have a wizard do it so that i know what i've got before i go to a merchant. Use readmagic on potions and scrolls. It doesn't cost anything
Yeah, you're right. I was being a bit of a n00b. I assumed that it was already identified... silly me. Now that it's identified it has the correct name, and my limited testing seems to indicate it works OK. (However, playing with the Web spell has revealed that it doesn't seem to trap people right away - those who fail the saving throw. The "web" effect only seems to trap people on the round AFTER the spell is cast... engine bug, I assume).
Well no, I was referring to failing the save on the Web spell and getting trapped. WEB seems to currently work like this: (assume all reflex saving throws are failed, no-one has magic resistance, no one has magic items or Freedom of Movement) (1) A PC mage casts web into the middle of a room. The room is filled with baddies. They all fail their saving throws and get webbed instantly. (2) After the PC Mage's turn, a PC Fighter takes his turn. He runs into the room. A message scrolls above his head saying "saving throw failed - webbed!" and the dice roll confirms this fact. HOWEVER he is able to stride right through the entire web and reach an evil mage at the back, swipe at him with his sword, crit-hit and kill him. I'm not sure but I *think* the PC Fighter only actually gets "webbed" on the SECOND round of combat. In fact, I think this holds true for anyone who ENTERS a web, rather than starting out standing on a piece of ground which gets webbed... Ideally, web would be improved by applying the web effect & trapping the PC fighter the movement he enters the web. Anyone agree/disagree?
Sorry, I was thinking of the web spell cast AT the PCs by spiders: u seeem to have to save when it is cast (their move), and then again on ur move to flee the web (unless they are standing in range, in which case, have at it!)
Think of it being the momentum carrying you through the web.. You'll notice it also happens with mobs who start their movement outside web too.
Ok, so the behavior of Web may or may not be bugged. However, along this tangent (offtopic a bit, hehe) I want to point out that in the game I'm playing right now, the Spiders @ Deklo Grove & Moathouse tower do NOT cast web on my PC party. I'm mentioning this because I've read so many times on this forum + atariforum, about the web-casting spiders. My install: fresh ToEE + Atari Patch 2 + Co8 3.0.4 + moebius DLL fix. I understand that using the Livonya mod will fix this problem... but I just wanted to point this out, because right now I think more people are recommending the above "install" rather than the Livonya mod... I plan on installing the Liv mod after I finish the game at least once. Right now I'm finding it a tad on the easy side (got to Nulb) so I'd appreciate an increase in difficulty level.
Nah, it's just that the easiest post to bump with links is Morpheus' thread. The patch order you have is the basic set-up. Livonya's mod goes straight over the top and I recommend it almost every time I post about it. It really is just superb. And then you've got the other modders putting in work on top of Livonya's work (which Livonya has been integrating into her mod) which has pushed the mod on further. To be honest though, it may be worth playing once without Livonya's mod, just so that your praise for the work s/he has done will be that little bit more fulsome
Why wouldn't u want them casting web? Without it, they may as well be oversized goblins with poisoned weapons. Its a web what makes a spider a spider. "Good luck to you Sam... many have received worse than this in payment for the slaying of their first orc".
I would like them to cast web. I am just pointing out, that in the Game Install I am currently playing, they aren't casting web. I have a feeling that many people are playing the same install sequence as me, since Livonya's mod hasn't get gotten as popular as the Co8 package. Thus, it would be a good idea if some sort of fix for the weak spiders was in the next Co8 release...
I think that that is an erroneous feeling. The feeling I get on THESE boards at least, is that most people feel Livonya's mod is now the new standard. Anyway, I'm pretty sure a new CO8 mod will be built on hers, since hers is.
