I just started playing the game with the 7.1 NC, and I noticed that none of my characters started with any gear save that which they had feats for (EWP, Weapon Focus, etc). I started with enough gold to buy some, but quickly found that none of the merchants in town sold the weapons I was trying to build my characters around. Most notably, I wanted to make a kukri specialist, and an archer (longbow specialized). The archer was out of luck, since none of the merchants sell anything other than shortbows. I made due with daggers for the kukri user, but I'd like to get some kukris before I invest feats into them..

I did the spider quest to get the cabinet maker to start making longbows, but they're all extremely expensive- I want a composite longbow (18 str), which is about 1200 gp. I've now spent several hours grinding random encounters trying to get enough gold to buy my archer his first bow- and he's now almost level 4 :(

Am I doing it wrong? Is it really supposed to be this hard to get some non-magical starting gear? Is there a faster way to earn about a thousand gold so I can buy a dang bow and start into the quests? I've not wanted to head into the game proper with the party's main damage dealer plinking out 1d6+0 damage per attack :(

    Welcome to the forum seidaku,

In my opinion, a composite longbow STR18 is an awful powerful weapon for a 1st level player to be using.

When your party first appeared in the shop before you chose to "Begin Adventure" was there a chest in the upper left of the first room that said "Starting Equipment" when you hover your mouse over it?

But yeah, a composite longbow STR18 is what, mighty +3 ?

If you're level 4 you may as well clear out the Moathouse now. By doing so, you'll be able to access Nulb, which has Kukris for sale. As for the gold, if you choose to kill instead of capture a certain cleric of Lolth in the Moathouse you'll get some high valued items which you can sell. Defeating him is no easy task however.

Uh.. I was never in a shop? After the opening vignette I started in the middle of the town. However.. I do recall seeing some pop up windows that referred to giant rats being in the next room, or some such- seemed very out of place.

Also, a composite longbow with a strength rating of +4 (18 str) should only be +400 gp according to the 3.5 rules, making it 500 gp total. 1200 gp is almost three times as much- that doesn't seem right.

If you installed and activated the Co8 Mod correctly you should be starting the game in a shop before doing the opening vignette.

The price of stuff can also vary depending on your parties highest appraise. If you do not have an intelligent rogue/bard/wizard, then you will pay through the nose for stuff. You can get a set of eyeglasses and a merchant scale that give you situational bonuses that will boost your appraise until you get higher level.

Grinding several levels might not be a good idea -- many people are already complaining that there's way too much experience and gold as it is. By 10th level, I simply _can't_ spend all the money the group has, unless I buy things they don't need or want. The main damage dealer definitely shouldn't be plinking, but rather, waving a greatsword or the like. The damage from a two handed weapon in the hands of 18 str wipes the floor with low level bow usage. ;)

Are you sure you activated the modpack? What version does the game list on the load screen or in the Co8 section of in-game Help?

Absolutely certain; not only does it show 7.1.0 NC in the loading screen, but I've now completed several of the NC quests :)

I do, however, continue to see pop up windows when I visit new areas that seem to contain tutorial-type information ("Now have your fighter charge!", "There's a chest in the next room", etc). I have started several new games, and it never does anything other than have me to go the opening vignette, then directly to town.

    In case it matters:

I'm running Windows 7. I installed the GoG version of ToEE to C:\Games\Temple of Elemental Evil, which is also where I installed the co8 modpack. I first encountered problems with the toee exe getting flagged as a virus by windows, but I fixed it by reinstalling and choosing 'allow' when the virus alert popped up.

My party is Neutral Good. I'm using 5 custom created characters; Wizard, Barbarian, Fighter, Rogue, Cleric.

Aside from the tutorial windows popping up (but without a tutorial :p), I haven't noticed any bugs. Oh, there is one thing- one of the first level spells son the Wizard's spell list is an error message instead of being a real spell.

I would reactivate the module as something is clearly not right. You should start in the shopmap, the popup boxes are not displaying correctly, etc.

Deactivate by activating vanilla, then reactivate 7.1.0. Be sure to let both activations complete (don't do anything until TFE-X tells you it's done). Also you will have to start a new game; your saves will not be compatible and should be deleted as they are most likely saves of a corrupted install.

Yes. As soon as you enter Hommlet, go inside the Church of St. Cuthbert and go upstairs and steal all of the potions and scrolls from the book in the bookcase next to the stairs, and then identify all of the scrolls and potions by casting Read Magic on them. Selling all of these potions and scrolls will give you thousands of gold. Personally, I think that gold would be more wisely spent on buying the precious Spyglass from Rannos Davl and Gremag in their trading post.

In the barracks of the moathouse dungeon, Seleucas (Lareth's Lieutenant) wields a Longbow, so you can loot a longbow from Seleucas' corpse after you've killed him.
