Never posted before but I've been stalking a while. First up I'm really in awe and thankful to the Co8 team for delivering such high quality work. Fantastic stuff! I sincerely hope you keep it up, so I can hope to enjoy more sweet gaming in the veins of Pool of Radiance, when RPGs were still good. That said, I have a some trouble with corrupted savegames. I have autosave on map change off, I don't use Quicksave. I understand that saving during combat is a no-go, but after testing a bit it seems that I even get corruption when I save outside of combat. I'm in Emridy Meadows putting undead to rest. I get corrupted savegames when I save directly after combat (green tent on Rest button, peaceful music, turn based off), but I noticed some critters still running around almost out of sight. So back to last working save. This time I make sure there are no critters around or running away because cleric turned them. I even make a little sweep of the immediate area. No critters, no combat, so I dare to save. Corruption again. Back to last working save. Now I figure, after combat let me just get all the way to the edge of the map before saving. This seems to work better, but not consistently. Also I noticed that when loading I will get the "corrupted" error but when I restart ToEE Front-End X I can sometimes load the same savegame. Very confusing. So I'm asking you: Is there a gray area to the "No saving during combat" rule? Are there situations when I'm not in combat but should not save regardless? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Omg, funny you should mention this. I got so frustrated after getting so many corrupted saved games and almost quit this game after playing for 30+hours! I quit toee in 2003 because of a corrupted saved game just before getting the last gem for the orb, I would have completed it just after defeating the final level. And 8 years down the road, I decided to get back to this game because I felt that I needed closure, and I want to complete something that I have started. Try to make multiple saved games, just because it can get easily corrupted. But after reloading again and again from a earlier saved games due to corrupted games, I am proud to say that I have just completed the game with the good and best endings! So after 8 years, I can say I have had final closure with this game
Emridy Meadows has neither a green tent nor peaceful music. Are you sure you're referring to the right map? Also, what do you mean by "turn based off?" Anyway, there should be no particular save danger at EM (or anywhere else, really). Have you used the console?
I have had crashes during saves in EM a few times and only there, the save works though so i only had to restart the game and load the save. Maybe i should have mentioned this before.
Thanks for the feedback. Yea, I wasn't clear. What I meant was: I'm positive I was not in combat mode when I saved, i.e. I could rest, combat music had ended, the Emridy Meadows ambient music was playing and I could move the party around in real time. I HAD used the console quite a while back. I had to remove Zert from the party because I had the invisible follower bug. But I didn't have corrupted savegames after that.. until Emridy Meadows. Do you think console use - notably follower_remove - can cause corrupted saves down the road, even if all seems ok at first?
Yes, I had crash to desktop during saves, too. But as you said, when that happens the savegame still works fine. I think the crashes are unrelated to savegame corruption.
That shouldn't be an issue, no. I guess I'll nose around the innards of that map, but nothing jumps out at me atm.
What about that elusive rusty dagger in the chasm in the lower right area of Emridy Meadows? Could it be responsible for instability while saving? I've had the game CTD while I was saving the game during combat on many occasions, but I'm pretty sure that it occurred at lots of different places (maps) in the game.
Funny you mention the dagger, I wondered how to get it, looking for a telekinesis spell or something. Good to know the dagger is a glitch (if I understand you correctly). BTW, I got through Emridy Meadows by traveling away via the overland map before saving. I've done the Welkwood bog and 80% of the Moathouse and saving works 100% of the time there!
An Enlarged character can reach it. I think its like a club or sling, and no one offers any money for it.
Unfortunately the dagger isn't actually there (doesn't appear among the mobs list). It's like the mysterious bugbear in the wall on Temple level 2. I doubt that it would cause that sort of instability anyway. I did find a strange clipping anomoly on the EM map though, and I think clipping issues can cause CTDs, so maybe that's it.
