Has anyone ever made a sorcerer/wizard multi-class work? I'm not sure but at first glance I'm thinking it might be the worst combo I can think of, but maybe I'm missing something.
Burne's apprentice is a Sor/wiz 1/1, but she sucks at both. It used to be, I don't think its fixed but i haven't tried in a while, that a specialist wizard could take prohibited school spells if he took a lvel in another spell casting class. So a one level dip in Sor would open up all spells, but you still would get the bonus spells and other advantages.
General consensus for D&D 3.5 in general is that casters shouldn't be multi-classed (there are a few exceptions). As Gen. Ghoul mentions, there are times a single level of one type of caster might be useful -- a high Charisma character might take a single level of Sorcerer for access to True Strike, or a single class of cleric for certain domain bonuses. But yeah -- it's about the worst multi-class you can probably think of. (I'd love for cleric/mage to be a more viable option in 3.5 -- that's one of my favorite 2nd edition combinations.)
Why are caster multi-classers frowned upon? My current Lawful Evil group consists of: Cleric of Hextor / Fighter - She's my main muscle, specializes in Heavy Flail Cleric of St. Cuthbert / Rogue - Sneak Attacks still kind of suck at 5/4, but he dual-wields those maces with some heft when fully buffed with Bless / Prayer / Divine Power Cleric of Nerull / Mage - He's basically my stay in the back caster with nothing but Web / 4 types of Fear Spells / Spiritual Weapons / Animate Dead A typical fight consists of a Web in the middle of the action, Ray of Enfeeblement on the bigger mobs, Fear / Scare the rest while my Cleric / Fighter with her Ring of Free Movement off of Lareth running in to wipe the floor. My Rogue sneaks around to soften up anyone on the edge of the web. Plus there is liberal use of Bane and Doom to go around with Spiritual Weapons swinging to keep enemies occupied. We are currently in the reclear of the moathouse, about to head to Verbonnoc.
I'm not really too happy with mult-classing in 3+. Imagine a 17th level mage gains a level, and can become an 18th level mage and, oh, I don' t know, learn a wish spell, or become a 17th level mage and a 1st level fighter. There's ... something wrong. I know this is an exaggerated situation, but, still, I wish it wasn't so.
If I multiclass, I will usually do a Fighter/Rogue or Ranger/Fighter. This way I do not lose out on spell casting. I may dip for 2 levels of rogue for evasion and access to some skills, but that is usually it.
