Yes or No: Do Followers Steal Experience?

I just started playing the ToEE campaign, and I have a burning question. Do followers steal experience points from my main party? I've tried looking in the manual and online, but all explanations were non-explicit =/

Yes, the larger the party, the smaller the experience awards.

On the other hand, the larger the party, the lower the level advancement => the higher the experience reward for the entire party after high level encounters.
