How exactly does Armour check Penalty affect things?

Take these 2 shields I am debating over keeping for my Tank, The hero shield +5 AC and -10 AC Penalty. And a +1 Magic Steel shield, +3 AC and -2 AC Penalty. Usually a quick look at how much each is worth gives you some idea of which is better but even though the former is worth less , am I wrong in thinking it is better?

Can anyone give me a breakdown on how AC Penalty works?

Depends on how you are going to use them. Like if you are trying to flank someone (or enter someones treath area) or do something else that requires tumble skill you take the AC penalty on your roll. Hero's shield is good if they charge you but bad if you are the one taking tumble checks.

AFAIK - AC pentalty is reduced from any roll you make for a DEX based skill (e.g. tumbel).

so if your tank won't be flanknig much (won't need to use tumbel often) go for the +5 shield.

hope i got it right.

Tumble: (as on manual page 75) "You can use this skill to move through an enemy square or move to avoid an attack of opportunity. The tumble skill check is automatically rolled when:
movement draws an attack of opportunity, the moving player has at least one point in tumble and the mover is not wearing medium or heavy armour (does not apply to dwarves)
If tumble check succeeds, no attack of opportunity is allowed."

Tumble is pretty much the only skill you need to take AC penalty into consideration with, since you can allways remove your shield and armor before trying to pick a lock etc.

If this is the case then I think that AC Penalty will not matter for my dwarf fighter as the way I fight battles there is no need for him to move. All the Mobs usually come to him as hes first in the firing line with an off tank behind to pick up any runners. Thanks all for making this clear, Ill be going with the +5 AC Hero shield, for now ;)

If you like to use shields, the Hero shield is a keeper since you can craft it to be a +7 AC... :D

The computer game manual states that the only skills that are affected by ACP (Armour Check Penalty) are:

    Hide
    Move Silently
    Sleight of Hand
    Tumble

Also, the Hero's Shield is extremely light (I think that it has a weight of only 15 pounds, which is incredible for a tower shield).
