I was looking around at game engines today and I found one called Torque that is designed for indie developers (DarkStorm??? haha). It has links to a few games that have been made with it, and one is a cool RPG RTS called Hinterlands. You can check it out here:

Now I haven't played it, but I thought some of you may be interested:

There also seems to be a cool pirate game from the same engine for $10 on Steam as well.

I wouldn't call myself an indie developer. Just your usual open-source developer (which is why torque is out of the question btw).

Do you have any opinions on HeroEngine? It is a really nice MMO building engine that just got knocked down from 500k to about 5k for indie developers. More info here: http://www.heroengine.com/

It's *really* hard to tell without an API documentation and a "trial" whether it's worth 5k.

I've played Hinterland, (Orc Lords) and will be first to say it's worth the $10 USD.

It's a load of fun at first, but after the novelty wears off it kind of drags on.

Quite a lot of, go here kill everything that moves and move to next area.

It's nice that the areas are randomly generated and are actually different each time you play. At the same time they are rather simple areas, due to the programs inability to generate complicated areas randomly.

Oh, almost forgot to mention that you can play as the humans, or the Orcs.

All in all, certainly worth the cost and it's good to support smaller devs.

I was just looking at Cyclopean yesterday to see if there were any updates or just anything. The thread hasn't been updated since like 2008. Is it still a project or was it left for dead?

I am very sad. The cyclopean forum has been removed. Does anyone know where it has been moved?

And a dark cloud descended, blotting out the sun. Satan has scored an evil victory. The post apocalyptic Troika game is gone and now Cyclopean.

Why? Why are the innocent punished?
Why the sacrifice? Why the pain?
There aren't any promises. Nothing's certain.
Only that some get called. Some get saved.
They won't ever know the hardship and grief for those of us
left behind. We commit these games to the void with a glad heart.
Within each seed there's the promise of a flower.
And within each death, no matter how small, there's always
a new life. A new beginning.
    Amen.

    Necro,

Do you know of the author RA Salvatore? Your writing reminds me his introductions to his books.

Anyway, I saw an interview of him once and he said he worked factory jobs in college and while he worked he thought of the plots for his books. Why don't you think of good story lines while at Hallmark, come home, and write a page or two a night? I would definitely buy your book and I know many people here have commented on your excellent writing style.

It would be a shame to waste such talent.

I just remembered that Salvatore's new book came out today. Gotta run to the store.
