Further to Krunch's request - here is how i did the tunnel between the dwarf and kobold areas.

I started out by desaturating (making it grey :p) the tunnel areas this can be done using a 'color' brush with a black color selected (soft edge), because i wanted them to be more 'lifeless' stone, that hadn't been finished. The textures were blurred also as they contained a bit of 'noise' which is essentially visual static, like you'd see on a TV set to a non-channel frequency - this was causing issues later with blending so i just blurred it away :p. The edges between the landing were also blurred with the clone-stamp (the dodgy bit near the wall was covered over later :) )

found a relatively even, yet still rough texture from mayang - that i thought would work well for the floor texture - this was overlaid over the modified base image.

the wall texture (from mayang as usual) was a normal blending mode (ie no blend at all), that i simply erased (using hard and soft brushes as needed) in the proper areas, so that it fit the tunnel properly. Certain areas were retouched with the clone-stamp, and edges were darkened as necessary with a multiply brush - just like i usually do shadows.

shadow layer was then added - i went in quite dark to begin with and fixed it later with another layer at the very end.

i then added a curves adjustment layer (if you dont know how to do this yet, the half black half white circle icon at the bottom of the layers pallete brings up the menu) in the areas where the artificial light was. I essentially masked off the areas which wouldnt have the light cast on them so only the 'lit' areas were made yellowish.

i then added a levels adjustment layer to change the contrast of the image, moving the midtone slider left to bring them up and decrease the harshness of the shadows. and finally popped in a lantern, with a few extra shadows painted on :)

.... my first attempt at following V.P.'s tutorial below, however I used paint.net and couldnt figure out how to do the shadows without botching it... I started with his first image and followed along as well as i could.
