First, this thread is ment to explore the story options available for scripted responses to evil acts committed in Hommlet and to form the basis of evil quests.

Evil Act 1: PCs Start Slaying NPCs of Hommlet

Evil Act 2: PCs slay Canon Terjon of St. Cuthbert

Evil Act 3: PCs slay Rufus and Burne

Evil Act1: PCs slay NPCs of Hommlet.

Here the software should have a counter for the number of locals that are killed. As the number rises it triggers events that affect the game.

At (5) - Experienced Guard Patrol hides in back room of random Cottage hoping to catch the criminals in the act.
At (8) - Rufus summons gargoyles and calls on friend to (Wizard 7) to help guard his tower.
At (10) - Rufus places a symbol of pain that affects CE characters in the first floor of his tower.
At (12) - Rufus hires experienced fighters (Lvl4) to guard his tower. Random encounter while traveling through Hommlet - Experienced Guard Patrol or Bounty Hunters
At (20) - 20 Guards and their commander a paladin are encamped north of the tower and will attack any evil party they encounter. Prices of supplies in Hommlet increase 100%

    Evil Act 2: Background
If the PCs slay Canon Terjon then it is most likely that his superiors would attempt to avenge his death by hunting down the evil doers.

This would most likely be done by a High Priest accompanied by experienced warriors and paladins who would raise the dead priest and then hunt down the evil doers.

Thus you would have a NPC party of 2 High Priests of 10th level (using the images of the priests in the Temple of St Cuthbert - Caimert and Terjon but a renamed Caimert) accompanied by several paladins and a low level wizard. A true test of an evil party's skill.

    Evil Quest 1:

    > Person of Evil Repute in Nulb offers characters reward to slay Canon Terjon of St Cuthbert
    >> Players slay Canon Terjon and Return to Nulb seeking reward
    >>> Person of Evil Repute states that his boss demands proof of evil deed
    >>>> Evil PCs return to Temple of St Cuthbert to obtain proof and find that Terjon has been raised by High Priest Gamon sent by the Senior High Priest of St Cuthbert in Verbonc
    >>>>> Evil PCs must defeat 2 Priests, new guardians of Temple and return to Nulb with the magical mace to collect reward.
    >>>>>>>>>Questioning temple guard survivor who was hiding in a room the PCs learn that when he was raised Terjon discovered his blessed Mace missing.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Questioning the Trader they discover that he sold the mace (Gather Information - to a character from Nulb who claimed it was his family's long lost heirloom).

    - Dialogs in Hommlet refer to how Priest was raised from the dead
[It was a miracle, Canon Terjon who was dead now is alive]
[St Cuthbert has blessed Hommlet, Priest Terjon is back from the dead]
[Business is good, very good with the arrival of the priests of St Cuthbert from Verbonc]
[The Priests of St Cutherbert have come to Hommlet to hunt down those who tried to murder Canon Terjon ]

    - Dialogs in Hommlet refer to large reward offered for criminals who slew the high priest.
[Aye. the priests of St Cuthbert have offered a 1000gp reward for the heads of the criminals who tried to kill Canon Terjon.]
[The reward for the killers of Canon Terjon is attracting lots of bounty hunters to Hommlet, and thats good for business]
[Some of the bounty hunters have staked out the Welcome Wrench]

    - Dialogs for Person of Evil Repute to Hire PCs
    - Dialog for person of Evil Repute to demand evidence.

Naturally if Temple is attacked Rufus, Burne and town guard arrive to defend the temple (unless they are already dead) and attack PCs once they leave the temple unless they can bluff their way past these guards.

Bounty Hunter Group 1: 4 Rangers equipped with longbows - Favored Enemy (human) wait to ambush the PCs outside the Tavern. They attack and run away.

Bounty Hunter Group 2: Inn of the Welcome Wrench is the major watering hold for bounty hunter's hunting the evil PCs's. NPC bounty hunters attack the Evil NPCs if they are spotted in the Inn unless they are [intimidated].

Now, what happens if the Clerics of St Cuthbert are defeated? Does the temple become home to a vampire and his spawn? does it remain empty? or does a family of hill giants move in, there's plenty of room and the ceilings are quite high.

    Some thoughts

"Now, what happens if the Clerics of St Cuthbert are defeated? Does the temple become home to a vampire and his spawn? does it remain empty? or does a family of hill giants move in, there's plenty of room and the ceilings are quite high. "

I had a quick/instant brainstorm: Defilement! Bloody sacrifice, descracation (sp?), etc...

Maybe you can use the priests of evil from the lawful evil start to repopulate the church? throw in a few demons, and its all good... :[

It can offer healing/rezz/cleric/magic services to TRUE evil chars...

Another point - if all it takes for Iuz (then St. Cutlery) to appear is Hedrak begging, maybe you can get a pissed off St. Cubed to appear some time?

I think it would be nice if you could burn it down. After all, that's how the NE opening vignette ends, sending the party of to look for "Terjon and his flammable church".
