Speaking of Lisa Gerrard (um, we were speaking of her four weeks ago anyway ), one of the songs from her Dead Can Dance days ("The Host of Seraphim") was used to great effect in the final act of the movie The Mist, which I just watched last night. Strange thing: I got that movie as an afterthought, because from what I remember of the ads when it came out, it seemed typical camp fare for a Stephen King adaptation. (Think Creepshow or any of the numerous made for TV movies that have come from his material). It's actually far from it. I didn't know this initially, but it was directed by Frank Darabont, who also did King's "Shawshank Redemption" and "Green Mile." He's far from a typical campy horror director. I don't think the movie did well at theaters, but it was actually pretty damn good. It took an utterly unexpected turn from horror to human tragedy at the end, portrayed in an irony so deep as to be almost too much to stomach. Most unexpected for a horror movie, where normally the protagonists (or at least main protagonist) prevail in the end. The brutality and finality of it, in addition to the irony, will knock you for a loop. Actually I would suggest you don't watch it if your really sensitive to such things. Earlier on in the thread the subject of male voices came up. I actually prefer male voices to female voices. I do like a few girl singers but the majority are men. My favorite singer is Casey Crescenzo, of The Dear Hunter and formerly The Receiving End of Sirens. myspace.com/thedearhunter try to listen to the song "Blood of the Rose," which I feel is a great showcase of his vocal ability. He left the band sometime after the CD's release to devote his attention to The Dear Hunter. Check out "This Armistice" and "Broadcast Quality."
Not so sure about that first selection, not really my type of music, per se, but nice. Now the second selection, THAT'S a good one. A bit soft for my tastes, not that I'm totally into LOUD/ANGRY music, bit nice. I need to share that one with J, I'm sure she'd love it.
