Huh. I've only seen dead goblins or beetles once or twice, they are usually all alive when I get there.

In the original IWD there are dead Goblins near the cave entrance and dead Beetles surrounded by live Goblins who presumably slew them, and live Beetles with dead Goblins inside the cave.

My previous versions of the ToEE version had all these guys alive and killing eachother... my next version will be more like the original.

Ah, kk. It's been years since I played the original Bioware IWD (and it wouldn't run on Win10 when I installed it for your conversion mod) so I had forgotten that. Makes more sense to do it that way then. :)

I just finished my run through ToEE:IWD with the reduced XP measures and it's still a little too high, my party of 6 PC's ended on 4255 XP each as opposed to 3576 XP each in the original IWD, that's what, 679 XP too much per character? That's about 16% too much. Given that the ToEE game already lowers XP by 40XP, increasing this to 41%% should bring the total XP per character in line with the original IWD XP totals, I think I'll try that next.

On the overall grand scale of things, are monsters in DnD 3.5 any tougher than 2nd edition, or the XP rewarded greatly different between the various pen&paper editions?

I've never been on the DM side of things, so I am not familiar with such things, but it appears to be the case since the ending ToEE:IWD XP total has been vastly greater than the original IWD game. Or is it that the original IWD game has restricted its XP rewards?

It sounds like you are going need to break the conversion of original IWD game into smaller sections than the current chapters, so you can confirm that ToEE:IWD doesn't get ahead of itself.

Do you think that you are going to need to confirm the XP values map by map? Now that you are fairly close to dialing it in for the prologue, hopefully this will get you close for the other chapters.

Sitra posted that python script in post #1066, maybe something like this will help minimize the amount of play testing needed to confirm the XP/levels at various points in your reworking of the coming chapters.

Keep in mind that in 2ed each class leveled at different amounts of xp. I think it might be worth a look see at what level each class finished iwd and maybe average it out. ;)

Both fair points, another thing I hadn't even considered, is if ToEE itself is giving the correct XP values for defeated monsters... I mean I know the XP is reduced by 40% anyway, but it never even occurred to me to check if the base XP values were in fact correct.

I think I'm going to have to dig out an XP/ CR table and cross reference with ToEE's XP/CR settings first, make sure thise are correct and go from there.
As for the actual levels, they both seem to be about the same by the end of the prologue, average party level is around 3rd level, I think my Bard was 4th level, and some of the dualclass characters were level 2/3, the others were level 3 in the original, the ToEE version each character was about 1500 XP over the level 3 threshold with another 2500 XP below the 4th level threshold.

I should have figured you would've already taken this into consideration.

Assuming Troika did their homework and set the correct XP awards for each CR (and I would assume they did) then everything is fine, and tweaking the XP award limit to 41% should make this mod close to perfectly scaled to IWD.

If they got the numbers wrong, I'm tempted to just leave them wrong anyway ,since the capped XP awards are already practically balanced between the two games, and no-one complained before about being awarded less XP than they should be getting.

One discrepancy there may be, is monsters with additional class levels, I would assume the Goblin Marshal's and Elite Goblins, Orc Shaman's, and Uligar would have had additional class levels in IWD, just as they do in ToEE:IWD, whether they actually give more XP in IWD than their lesser brethren I don't know.

ToEE calculates XP awards correctly (at least up to lvl 10). It's possible that 2nd ed (or IWD) just assigned a different XP amount than 3rd ed.
I do think that you should put in the effort to learn and use the xp script. I believe it will save you a lot of time down the line. The last one I posted includes everything in the demo, and I've also tested it with a live playthrough.

Just glad you're still around Ted :D which reminds me, now I have the alterations to deities done, I should make sure Everard and Accalia register player followers of Tempus correctly in their dialogues.

Yeah, when I write that bit of script Sitra wants I will double check all such dialogues and correct them.

I fixed the religion check dialogue for Everard and Accalia, Accalia's one confused me for a little while, most of the text was referencing Diety #8 until the bottom of the page where it was referencing Diety #16, then I remembered I'd borrowed Calmert's dialogue for donations to the Church and it made sense - Diety #8 was Hieroneous, Deity #14 was St. Cuthbert.
