When a Familiar gives +2 on Will Save Checks, what exactly does that mean? If I have a player that has a low Wis modifier, would a familiar that gives +2 on Will Save Checks increase the Wis modifier? Does the familiar need to be outside of the inventory? I know this is probably obvious information to most people, but the longer I read about it, the more confused I get. How do you (anyone responding to this thread) choose a familiar for your character in ToEE?
1. It means that your character gets a bonus of +2 to every will check that s/he will ever make in the game. Will saves are made against spells such as domination, or suggestion, that is anything that might try to magically (or in any other way) persuade your character to do something. 2. No, to increase your WIS modifier you have to use spells (for temporary effect), WIS increasing items (work as long as they are worn), or increase your stats when you get a stat increase point (every four levels, permanent effect). 3. No, but you can take it if you want extra help in the fight (not recommended though, familiars tend to die easily). 4. The familiar is determined by your character's alignment. Don't remember the exact pattern though. It should be present in the in-game help/core rule book.
The manual doesn't mention alignment in regards to familiars. Instead, it lists the familiars and the benefits they give if chosen. Because of that, I assumed that alignment didn't matter, unlike other games.
D'oh... I totally forgot... there's a menu where you choose your familiar... Sorry about that one. It's in the radial menu.
