And river crossings are often the scenes of battles in real life, too. ;)

If anyone is around, I have a question.

If a flame sword goes into water, does the flame get extinguished?

No. The flame is magical, so it wouldn't be extinguished. If placed in water, it would make the water steam and boil, though.

You could opt that the flame goes out, only when the blade is immersed, only to spring back again when removed.

Yet another question, if anyone is up.

Can lacedons be turned by a cleric?

Yes. I do it regularly in ToEE.

They look like zombies, sort of slow ghouls. They show up in the river random encounters.

I've never done it...never even thought about it. I always just whack them.

Great. Got to revise what I've done yet again.

This water battle is the longest I've ever done...had to print it just to make sense of it. It's jagged and disjointed.

    Comments?

Real battles are fragmented, disjointed, chaotic, confusing, etc. Post it and we'll look at it, if you want. You can still edit. Maybe even post it on it's own thread.

    Looks like I missed you.

Here's the fight scene. Haven't edited it at all, yet. Not finished, either.

That's interesting. Didn't work. I'll try another way.

A ferryman's shack sits not too far from the river, his rowboat tied to a post on the bank. No one is inside, and it doesn't look as though anyone has been there for awhile. They decide to take the boat across themselves. Splice lags behind, as he has since they left the druid's grove.

Almost to the other side of the river, a merrow rises from the water in back of the boat. Splice calls a warning, but it is too late. The water ogre swamps the boat, spilling all of them in the river.

Splice swoops and darts manically around the merrow, trying to give Chloe and Rilen, good swimmers, a chance to gain the river bank. Hador, who cannot swim at all, holds onto the boat with both hands, curses the merrow in every language she knows. Libere hangs onto the side of the capsized rowboat with one hand, unable to reach his sword; he bashes the merrow with his shield on his other arm.

Distracted by the attacks coming in different directions, the merrow swings around and back around, trying to hit the raven, then Libere. It rocks the boat even more. Hador swears at them all.

Chloe reaches the bank, prepares to send a ray of fire at the merrow. She sees a figure lurching toward her from the side, turns to face it.

Rilen, screaming, shoots up out of the water, wings trailing fire, wheels, flies directly at the big ogre.

Splice flies to help Chloe, is attacked by a water mephit. He angles sharply out of the way of the icy breath, thanks his bracelets and flies under it, comes up behind.

Dodging the fire eagle, the merrow slips and falls forward, sending the boat toward the riverbank. Her feet on the riverbed, Hador wastes no time getting out of the water, rushes toward the lacedon that threatens Chloe. Temporarily crazed, she forgets that she can drive the water ghoul away with her innate clerical ability to turn the undead. Libere, his feet planted, draws his sword, waits for the merrow.

It comes up thrashing, it's spear lost in the water. Enraged, the merrow charges Libere barehanded. Mortel Rouge flames and dances, striking the ogre once, twice, thrice. Wounded, still the merrow stands, clubs Libere with his fist, then yet again. Libere staggers, but keeps thrusting with his sword, slicing when he can't.

Meanwhile, Chloe has been struck by the lacedon and is paralyzed. Hador gives Ferusaxe his head. With one swing, Ferusaxe nearly chops the lacedon in half, keeps chopping until it lies in pieces. Purple ichor puddles on the ground, splashes on Hador's armor, on Chloe.

Screaming again, the fire eagle halts in midair above the mephit, flaps his flaming wings, and catches the mephit in the fiery wash. It falls in ashes. Rilen, in his fire eagle guise, turns to aid Libere.

Libere needs the help; the merrow doesn't seem anywhere close to defeat and batters him with it's fists. Rilen comes up behind the ogre, burns the back of it's head with his breath.
This, it notices and turns to face Rilen, who has already flown out of range. Libere shoves Morte Rouge into the merrow's body, hits a vital organ, it falls defeated. It's body splashes into the water, sending the river outward in waves. The water is red with it's blood.

Rilen lands on the bank, changes back into his normal form. Libere slowly leaves the water, bleeding from his ears. Ferusaxe back in her control, Hador is measurably calmer. She attends to Chloe, frees her of paralysis and ghoul fever, while Splice hovers, anxious, overhead. Once she is done with Chloe, Hador turns to Libere, heals him too.

Anyone wearing metal armor whose feet are not on the bottom, with their head above water, drowns.

Organizationally, it seems to need a plan for the crossing and an "introduction" of every attacker. There also needs to be a reason that there are different kinds of creatures attacking together. I don't think they would normally be together.

Then I'll make it mithral armor. She is hanging onto the boat with both hands. She's supposed to aware of how close she is to drowning, but not quite.

    Ok. Makes sense.

Do I need to capitalize things like 'merrow,' 'lacedon,' etc.?

Put her IN the boat? In reality, she would be out of the armor when crossing deep water.

Your choice. Capitalizing implies a formal title: The Merrow.

'Merrow' and 'lacedon' are common nouns and hence are not capitalized. A proper noun - like in 'Eddie the Lacedon' - would be capitalized, and actually 'the merrow,' as used in a sentence like "the merrow crested the hill," is a common noun and would not be capitalized.

    So -

"We saw a merrow and a lacedon crest the hill and go happily on their way."

"Eddie the Lacedon crested the hill and went happily on his way."

"The merrow and the lacedon crested the hill and went happily on their way."

    Thanks to both of you.

If she didn't have the armor on, it would be in her pack and lost, in the boat, or on her back. I guess I'll put it in the boat.

I forgot the merrow has a 10 ft reach. Changes things a bit.

Going to be hard to say why they are together without having an interludy thing. Sigh. Don't want to do that. 2 merrows? No lacedon, no water mephit. I want Chloe paralyzed. 3 lacedons? gah.

This scene has already cost me a pack of cigarettes. I'm not going to change it that much. I think I've got it sorted out. I hope.
