Ok, J'allan I just checked this out. You probably mean "Helm of Brilliance" and that need the ability to have flamestrike in your spellbook (spell lvl5). So I don't have any area spell untill rather late. Hmm-I don't know.

I tought the xp penalty was rather harmless since you level up very fast and you will be level 20 long before the end of the game.

Yeah, that's the one. Sorry i misremembered the name. I don't think you need the spell in your spellbook... i am pretty positive all you need is at least one level of Cleric. My guess is however they scripted the helm, it must search to see if the character has Cleric levels, or casts Cleric spells.

If the character is not a Cleric, i think you only have access to the first ability, if that. at least, my Paladin before taking a level of Cleric could only use the Detect Evil ability.

which she already had as a class ability.

In any case, it's got some pretty tough crafting costs... ahem.. you could console it in if you want to test it out on a separate save... Good Luck!

Looked in the SRD 3.5, and this is the "Helm of Brilliance" stats, which differ rather significantly from the "Helm of Radiance" in TOEE... i'm still pretty sure that's what it was called... when i crafted it. Maybe it was made by a Co8 modder?

    Helm of Brilliance

This normal-looking helm takes its true form and manifests its powers when the user dons it and speaks the command word. Made of brilliant silver and polished steel, a newly created helm is set with large magic gems: ten diamonds, twenty rubies, thirty fire opals, and forty opals. When struck by bright light, the helm scintillates and sends forth reflective rays in all directions from its crownlike, gem-tipped spikes. The jewels’ functions are as follows:

Diamond: Prismatic spray (save DC 20)
    Ruby: Wall of fire
Fire opal: Fireball (10d6, Reflex DC 20 half)
    Opal: Daylight

The helm may be used once per round, but each gem can perform its spell-like power just once. Until all its jewels are depleted, a helm of brilliance also has the following magical properties when activated.

It emanates a bluish light when undead are within 30 feet. This light causes 1d6 points of damage per round to all such creatures within that range.
The wearer may command any weapon he wields to become a flaming weapon. This is in addition to whatever abilities the weapon may already have (unless the weapon already is a flaming weapon). The command takes 1 round to take effect.
The helm provides resistance to fire 30. This protection does not stack with similar protection from other sources.

Once all its jewels have lost their magic, the helm loses its powers and the gems turn to worthless powder. Removing a jewel destroys it.

If a creature wearing the helm is damaged by magical fire (after the fire protection is taken into account) and fails an additional DC 15 Will save, the remaining gems on the helm overload and detonate. Remaining diamonds become prismatic sprays that each randomly target a creature within range (possibly the wearer), rubies become straight-line walls of fire extending outward in a random direction from the helm wearer, and fire opals become fireballs centered on the helm wearer. The opals and the helm itself are destroyed.

Strong varied; CL 13th; Craft Wondrous Item, detect undead, fireball, flame blade, light, prismatic spray, protection from energy, wall of fire; Price 125,000 gp; Weight 3 lb.

whew! OK, here is the ingame description and item code:

    {6412}{A Helm of Brilliance absorbs the first 30 points of fire damage from any attack against its wielder, and grants the ability to cast Detect Undead, Consecrate, and Flamestrike.}

I stand corrected once again. Helm of Brilliance it is! Though i like Helm of Radiance better... hmmm.

I'm confused... so there is an item in the game that has the same name as something in the SRD but quite different effects, and sounds grossly overpowered? :scratchhe

We can probably have both... a helm with DR30 against fire that can cast Flame Blade, Fireball and Prismatic Spray (and Detect Undead) is quite doable. Probably can't do that 'detonates when damaged' effect, though. Pity.

SO AWESOME! Shiningted, if you were able to implement a helm closer to the SRD description, that would be fantastic. This helm has HIGH requirements in it's creation, but pretty much turns a well equipped Paladin into a one man or woman army with it's offensive capabilities. i love it. (This, and the Masterwork MoonIvy armor are two of my favorite specialty armor equipments in TOEE. MoonIvy has pretty much unlimited castings of Stinking Cloud and Poison... and its decent light armor.)

Sounds like it would be a fun item to have in PnP as well, with the powers, and the consequences for a failed save against a Flame attack that breaks through the fire damage reduction.

SRD has a lot of fascinating Wondrous items, i skimmed the entire list yesterday...

well, IF you are able to mod that, could the original one, with the wrong stats become a "Helm of Radiance" lol ?? could be a lesser form of the SRD accurate one ... maybe if possible the Cleric requirement to use the item abilities could be investigated? or at least added to the item description:

"If a character that is not a cleric wears the helm, non of its powers are evident."

In any case, may i just say again that I'm glad to see you back as an active member on the forums again! :) Thanks for all you have done to make this game great!

My guess would be that the "Helm of Brilliance" in the game is different from the original in the rules, because the original requires a caster of 13th level and the original game went only to 10th level.

Just wanted to confirm again as well that you can't pick Ehlonna as a human unless you are a ranger or druid to start...

I like the plant domain a lot as well since entangle is really useful early on, but it only works outdoors. More damage is nice, but isn't critical I don't think (yet) since as a cleric, your biggest concern is probably getting swarmed and limited crowd control ability.

I'm going to try to ironman + solo the game with no NPCs now having never finished it before. Would be interesting to figure out and plan all the major battles to try to survive. Some of the tips here sound really helpful (such as the fog spells to protect against archers) and looking forward to all the tactical battles.

The great thing with trying to solo is you really get to learn all the skills/spells needed since you can't blindly just power through it as you can with multiple PCs.

I've heard folks swear by bards as excellent solo heroes- crowd control via song and spells, healing and good NPC interaction skills and with Weapon Finess very good at melee or missile- I might give one a try the next time I try a solo game..

If you go for a solo bard, put in also a lvl of fighter & 2 lvls of rogue - that will help you a lot.

I was wrong or I was remembering from years back. Dwarven stability is in the game and works appropriately ie. it doesn't add to your trip attempts but it helps you resist being tripped.
