Always had kinda teh same issue, be it in White Wolf, GURPS or D&D. My friend and I were often the setite/tsimizi, or thief/low balling fighter and another of us always played the righteous female paladin or less amoral vampire clans.

Since we are seriously digressing here, I will chime in again. The trouble with having characters with widely differing principles and/or ways of doing things in a PNP game is that it really stretches verisimilitude (had to get that word in!) In a real world situation, the party would split up sooner or later, as some would not stand the evilness/goodness/recklessness/overcautiousness etc of the others. (Granted, there could be situations where they are forced together for a time, or the nature of a PC is disguised for a time).

Several times in a PNP game, I have had to stomach behaviour that my character would not because I want the game to continue and its impractical in the real world to split the group. As a DM I would normally insist that the characters all be played as reasonably able to act as a coherent unit together- the reasoning being that their heroic destiny together would never have come to pass if they were the types to start killing each other or storming off in disgust every 5 minutes. (Sort of evolutionary theory- the parties that do this never succeed and sink into obscurity. On the other hand, those that can work together are the ones the bards sing about and thus suitable subjects for a heroic role playing game). Of course, in your game, its YOUR GAME. YMMV etc.

i completely agree, a lot of players i have noticed cant handle the freedom of evil without trying to kill, enslave or steal from the other PCs, but if you think about it, being evil puts you in a sliver slim minority in almost everywhere civilized you could go, so its not beneficial to alienate anyone who is remotely likeminded and gain an enemy among them.

i've always been pretty good at justifying why my evil characters do what they do but dont turn on the party, even as a kir-lanan gargoyle (a scout taking notes on their weaknesses :D). plus some characters may not BELIEVE they are evil, so they arent out doing bad things just because they are NE alignment, but because they think its right or that it doesnt matter.

we've had some great party destroying conflicts of mixed alignment parties, and even of purely evil parties, but often we can settle it in non-fatal but vicious duels to show who is the real power. but that can of course lead to being pushed off a cliff when you need help climbing up or being coup de grace'd, etc. but hey, why be evil if you cant have fun sometimes :)

one of the most creative but PC-whined about way the DM ever got all the evil guys to work together was to say we were all under enchantment spells by some evil being that made us its henchmen. its weird how when they play good alignments they will basically go on any quest anyone ever mentions, but when they are evil and a superior evil being is MAKING them do it they didnt like it.

also, are there rules against going off topic? if so my bad

i've never killed Iuz :D is he a lesser deity or demigod or something, i'm unfamiliar with him. is he in deities and demigods because i could check that out... in fact... i shall :D

Iuz "the evil", also known as the "Old One" is a BBEG demigod in Greyhawk. He has his own kingdom and butts heads with the good realms like Veluna and Furyondy, but also with other evil realms (particularly the Horned Society, who are Nerull worshippers). You would like him:p

Eeeeh, :blowme: :poop: for brains. Whether you liked it or not has no bearing on the issues that were being discussed. If you're gonna lick sphincter, at least get his name right; and please do it without quoting me. Do you even know the difference between a dragon and a dragoon? I doubt it, so here's some help:

I dunno, without getting political I can think of some folks who are absolutely Lawful Evil: a lot of them actually.

The execs of a certain Scandanavian chocolate company who sold powdered milk in Africa as infant formula and killed heaven knows how many babies (but made money), the 'drug' manufacturers in India who supply fake cut-rate pharmaceuticals to the sick and dying... i bet we all know a big business story like that.

Evil is a philosophical choice. A third of the friggin' planet is evil, they just don't all walk about saying it outloud.

That etymology of dragoons was interesting. Technically the Australian Light Horse (so-called because they were light infantry on horseback, not light cavalry) who fought in Palestine in WWI would have been dragoons, it seems.

In an rpg sense, this reminds me of a debate about whether you could have a Paladin whose religion dictated that all halflings were the incarnation of evil. As a result, he would burn their wigwams :txtsmilie and slaughter their non-combatants mercilessly, all the while believing he was acting for the greater good. Some people argued that he could still be LG and do this, BECAUSE HE BELIEVED IT WAS GOOD.

It appears that you (like me) would favour the opposite point of view and make him evil from an "objective" absolute point of view (independent of his own subjective beliefs). So, we would play him as a blackguard who nevertheless thinks he is a Paladin and who tells everyone who will listen how noble he is. After all, "who else among you has the guts to do what I do, to hear their screams as I do what must be done to save us all" and other sicko stuff. Hell, he probably is a good husband and loving father as well.

I can certainly see why you would find exploring this kind of evil character interesting, and you are even inspiring me to try it myself sometime soon (as long as I can keep it mostly complementary to the group dynamic). The problem is that most players aren't up to the job like you seem to be and just start killing everyone else etc. Also, it sounds damn hard work to do properly, as well as more disturbing- 2 dimensional evil is probably more suitable for an evening's light entertainment!
