I have just installed TOEE after never being able to play it when I bought it years ago. I am looking forward to trying the game with the mod pack and new content, so thanks to all involved.

My laptop has a native resolution of 1600 x 900 but I can't see this in the available resolutions in the front end. I can see in this thread people mentioning 1600 x 900, so will I need to edit the toee.cfg to set the resolution correctly? Will the front end change this when I launch the game?

Alternatively, can you recommend the best resolution setting for me to use (and I will look for the scaling to turn it off).

    Thanks,
    Nick

I would try 1600 x 900 (edit toee.cfg) and see if it works. TFE-X won't change what it already is on it's own.

    Thanks for your reply, Gaear.

I've been running on 1440 x 900 and no scaling and its working fine, albeit with the sides not quite the width of the screen.

I'll try to edit the cfg and see how it goes.

Just to confirm, I changed the config file to 1600 x 900 and it worked fine.

As I couldn't be bothered trying to understand how/why Vista wouldn't let me edit the config file in the Program Files area I just copied it to my desktop, edited it there are and then copied it back again. I was asked several times if I really, really wanted to paste it but it didn't stop me from pasting to the toee folder.

    Thanks again,
    Nick

It's because of User Account Control being just a bit too enthusiastic. The only way to edit an .ini file these days is to either disable UAC or open the program you want to use to edit the .ini file (usually Notepad or a replacement) by using the "run as administrator" option, then opening the .ini file from within the program.
It's annoying, but Microsoft now discourages the use of such files or thinks they should be used on a per user basis.

Also, you have to watch out, sometimes your settings you altered won't work as the .ini file got copied to a "virtual store" in your user folder and this overrides the one in the "\program files (x86)" folder.
You can find the virtual store in
    %homepath%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\

In the past I always went to the toee.cfg file and changed it to match my native resolution of 1600x900 after installing 7.9, I cannot find the file has it been moved or is it gone?

Did you reinstall the game? You need to launch ToEE once from a new installation before the .cfg file will appear.

no I just installed 7.9 and then activated it from the front end. I am guessing I can just activate the original TOEE from the front end and then reactivate 7.9 I don't need to actually reinstall the game from GOG?

No, you don't need to reinstall the game. If toee.cfg had been there before though, there's no modpack-related reason it would be gone now. (Neither the installer nor TFE-X goes looking for toee.cfg to delete.*)

I'd just activate the module, launch the game, and then look for the file.

    * At least I don't think TFE-X 4 does. Regardless, the file should be there after you launch the game.

Hi, I'm trying to play the game on a wide screen for the first time. Problem is whenever I change the figures in toee.cfg from what is original there (strangely it's: video width: 800, video hight 600) to something I want, like 1600x900, and close the editor after saving the change there is no change in format whille playing the game. When I re-open cfg it is always back on the original numbers. ??????
    Any suggestions would be nice

I have a 720p laptop screen and a 1080p monitor. I set my game resolution to 720p and I can play it on either visual output. However, on the laptop, the mouse cursor often disappears when I minimise the game. It happens, but less often, on the bigger screen too. And when I change between screens, the game only sometimes continues to work visually (can hear sound, but no image).

What version of Windows are you using? If it is Vista, 7, or 8 then you might need to run the game as an administrator in order to affect these values. This is due to new security "protection" in \Program files and \Program Files (x86). Also is it a 32-bit or 64-bit version?
    Also look in
%localappdata%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Atari\Temple of Elemental Evil
to see if there is another copy of the file in there. Note that if you're using the 32-bit version you need to drop the (x86) and the preceding space.

This advice only applies to Vista or later, anything before Vista like 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP will not have these changes.

I always play in full screen mode, but I recall this was a common problem on DirectX games on my old Windows 98SE/XP machine, in BOTH OSes. I've experienced this with all the Infinity Engine games (but rarely), and commonly with Pool of Radiance 2:Ruins of Myth Dranor, which I swear the TOEE engine is based on given that the interface is so similar, with TOEE being far more true to D&D (although I'm mostly familiar with AD&D 2.0). I'd mention other games I've experienced this with, but besides Neverwinter Nights 1 (also rare, but not unheard of), I don't know how likely people here were to have played it.

The solution is to always use full screen mode and don't minimize the game or tab out of it. If you get an IM or other alert that requires your attention, save and quit, then reload when done.

I've never found a better solution than "save before tabbing and be prepared to reload". Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I searched YEARS ago before there was a Windows Vista.

Thanks for your answers. I use windows XP. And as far as I can judge from my graphic card it is set on full screen.
So right now there is not really a way I can play the game "undistorted" on my wide screen monitor?! (sigh)
