How do you handle looting/selling?

By the time I got into the second level of the temple itself, looting/selling has turned into quite a chore. For the first level of the temple (that is, the first underground level, not the empty entrance area), it took me like 4 trips to sell everything. It just feels like a lot of work. What do you guys do? Not bother picking stuff up unless it's rare? I almost wish you could send a companion back to town to sell stuff ala Torchlight 2.

Hmmm chest? Maybe I missed something but I could've sworn I went through the entire place. What does it do and where is it?

    Spoiler incoming:

in the clerics room (bookcase) is a scroll of extra dimensional chest, a zombie in the area by the gnome captives drops a chest (make sure you identify it first) than have anyone with UMD skills or wizard cast the scroll now youll have a option in the radial to cast the chest, one note is make sure you dismiss the chest after you put/take things in the chest or youll have to go find it (or lose it on a random map)

Even with the chest it can become a chore. Especially when you sell the clothes to the tailor, the leather to the leather worker, the wooden stuff to the cabinet maker, the gems and jewelry to the jeweler, the magic stuff to the cleric, and the metal weapons to the smith.

How come Jaroo doesn't sell druidical supplies?

    spoiler:

Ok ya I actually stumbled on that chest but couldn't figure out what it was for. So is it basically unlimited storage or is it that when I put items in the chest and then dismiss it it sells the items inside automatically? I don't understand what you mean by UMD and "cast the scroll" either. Thanks

One small advice if it ain't magical/ammo for yr weapons don't bother picking it up there are 2 certified ways of getting rich:1) rogue/bard with obscenely high appraise(so the few things u do pick up are sold for tons of platinum) 2)be prepared to lose xp and craft things to sell(easyist thing probably buying master work items from bro smith givem' a +x and resell) or 3) a combo of 1 and 2 to ensure u get enough platinum for 7 games worth.....
Usually amping up a bard/rogues appraise and picking up magic loot is gonna net u plenty of cash(to properly gear up if u now exactly what u want (may not be enough for experiments tho)) after u clear out the moathouse and unless u go for luxury items u are rarely gonna be hard pressed for cash (i for one fully equip my party of 5 with +3 spell resistant armor, +3 amulet of natural armor, and +3 weapons(typically infused with ice&fire occasionally holly) belt of giant's str for the melee boys, archery gloves, dex gloves and shocking enough i finish the game with a couple hundreds of platinum and the party is yet loaded with lite magical items that sell for at least 10k gold)
The key here is to prioritize what u need most and get it; for instance i typically play low magic parties so for me upgrading weapons and armor is vital afterwards comes miscelanious equipment that enhances my guys(bets of giant str, archery braces, natural armor amulets, infusing weapons with elemental dmg etc) and i place little or no value on stuff like craft wand/ring or purchase of spell scrolls
Also depending on the nature of yr party some items dead cheap things are simply great to have; for my guys these are things like prayerbeads of blesing/healing, lockpicks, bardic instruments and a few brewed potions on the ready(having mele guys wear prayerbeeds of healing saved my ass several times when i was out of healing spels/casters were ko'ed or too far to reach a dying pc ; also at times i found myself out of bardic songs so a prayer beed of blessing helped out some; as for the picks/bard instruments what can i say many times an enemy/chest roled smth i was barely able to beat(narrowly by 1 or 2) so they definitely justified theyr costs ;not to mention what the effect of smth like a mass bull's str potion ingestion can do for yr predominantly low level melee centered gang ;) )

And don't forget you can right click on an item in a dead foes inventory to automatically place it in yours and while you have the dead guys inventory open you can switch to other characters in your party that are close enough and put stuff in their inventory.

By the time I hit the Temple (anywhere between 4th and 7th level depending on party and NC order of play) just about the only thing I bother with that isn't obviously valuable, plot-item or magic is the breastplates from the temple guard, which are worth ~150gp each and are pretty numerous. I seem the be the opposite of Ank: minimal crafting of gear and lots of spellcasting, so by the time I am looking to craft XP is usually the limiting factor. I find that the pointer in TOEE is quite vague and the whole set up is quite frustrating for moving huge amounts of stuff back and forth between inventories and vendors etc (and I tend to sell mainly to Smyth too, since he's nice and close to my landing point on Homlett) so I don't bother. Once I'm done with the moathouse money isn't a big issue for me the way I play.

Minor point in addition to this, while the looted body inventory is open (or any chest you come accross) you can also throw less valuable items from your inventory INTO that person (or chest)'s inventory to make room for the better stuff.

That is a good way to get rid of the 2sp javelins so you can hold more 150gp breastplates, for instance.

The chest will only hold so much before it gets full.

Also, the merchants will only buy so much before claiming that they have no more room. However, if you scroll their display down to show empty slots, you can usually sell more things by putting them directly into an empty spot (instead of just dragging them over to almost anywhere like you can do at first). I've not seen any bad concequences to doing that, although I do get concerned it might have some sort of buffer overflow effect.

I believe that when the chest gets full, you cannot pull the same trick. If you try it, the things just end up on the ground.

A spell of teleport is nice for getting out of the dungeons to go back to sell things.

It is worth it to head up to the jeweler for selling jewels. You get about twice as much for them there. If you haven't noticed there is a signpost near the welcome inn that allows you to teleport to various places in Hommlet.

I WISH that the teleport spell would work both ways, i.e. allow a PC to place a mark in a place to teleport back too. I recall playing a game that had such a feature -- think it was one of the HOMM series.:p

The rogue with high appraise is good advice. In my current game, I don't have a rogue so I am training one of my druids in appraise -- helped along with a bunch of merchant scales and a pair of eyeglasses.

When using the scrolls of Secret Chest, make sure the one reading doesn't have another chest in inventory first. Also, I've noticed you have to have 5,000 gp for the scroll to work properly.

As Dale mentions, you can overload chests to a degree, but when you next open them, a significant amount of the stuff will end up on the ground around the chest.

Also make sure you read Cerulean's note (which you'll find in all newly acquired chests) about placing magic items in the chests.

I can honestly say I looted every last item worth any amount of money (basically everything but slings and clubs) throughout an entire play through. Using the chest is mandatory. When it starts to get filled, switch out the heavy stuff in the characters inventory, like armors, into the chest for light things, like gloves and boots. I never use non magical boot, gloves, or helmets, since they have no in game use. But i can wear those things out of a dungeon crawl to clear up space in the backpack. Belts of Giant Strength for everyone who has room for one helps even the lowly wizard in carrying some loot.

Now some may think, what a waste of time, there is plenty of money in the game. Not so, all of those Belts cost money, so does all of that crafting of weapons and armor. While I did have quite a sum at end game, I went regularly without much cash from spending it all.

Wow! Different strokes, I guess- I find I don't have the patience to do all the trading. Partly because my mouse pointer is less accurate in TOEE than normally, which makes it a bit of a chore- as if I've swapped my desk surface for something blank and shiny. Anyone else get this?

When the chest is full try scrolling down and placing the item in an open spot, same goes for any merchants.
