The enemy spellcasters in the broken tower and the A band of adventurers random encounter all use a trick similar to what Necroticpus suggested, where they cast buffing or defensive spells during the dialogue option selections just before combat starts (which is awesome!).

Having NPC's buff during dialogue is a good way, but I found it complicated when I was modding WotGS. If the player rushes through the dialogue by pressing 1 repeatedly or something, the NPC's are casting their first buff when you tell them to buff their 2nd spell, and they dont cast the 2nd spell.

I swear that each of my 4 party members had 3 sets each! 3 green cloaks and 3 green/yellow shields. Maybe Wilfrick gave me extra. I sold them all to Brother Smythe.

About that pre-buffing thing. How about if the NPCs do like some of the other NPCs in the temple when the PCs get close? If you go with 50 feet of Lareth's room, he casts some spell or another because you can see it's emanations. As soon as you get within sighting distance of Hedrack, he casts a spell or 2. Falrinth also does this. And no one has started any dialong with them. Terjon and Calmert and Jaroo also cast buffs when you see them, just in case you get squirrely.

This may just be a bug with my party and game, but every time I try to look at the Drow rogues bodies after the fight with the two Drow fighters, two spiders and the two mentioned rogues, I get a CTD. Guess I will just wait for the bodies to decay and get the goodies then.

With others above, I second the idea of enemy spellcasters buffing themselves and their buddies before hand. It would really add some spice to the game and make things more "interesting".

Well I got the bodies gone on those Drow Rogues but something in their inventory still causes a CTD when I try to access my inventory. So I will just forget it and move on. Still a little frustrating, but I will guess the error is on my end and so probably not the game itself. Oh well.

This sounds like the Old Hickory Branch crash from looting one of the kobold bodies. IIRC, it was one that had sling stones in his inventory.

This is good. I thought it was just a quirky type thing with my game but I also had this exact same problem with the drow in the tunnels. I just left them alone after I reloaded and kept moving on.

I'm doing Hickory Branch and am encountering a consistent CTD. I had gone on a mostly northernly route and had just finished off the group of 5 gnolls, 5 bugbears, with an ogre, ogre shaman, and a wolf. There is a small fishing boat laying in the grass a little to the west of them. If I tried to go south of this area and explore, CTD everytime.

I know that there is a group of orcs with an ogre right up against a building down there. I believe the the kobold leader - the one that talks to you - is in the area too.

I had talked to the goblin leader and the duo of the gnoll leader and the female bugbear leader but that was all.

I thought I would be clever and simply go back to Hommlet and unload all the stuff I had looted so far and recharge spells. However, if I now try to simply go back to HB, it CTDs as soon as I reach it. I ended up making a run back to Nulb and exploring the temple a bit too so I unfortunately saved over my rotation of saves and no longer have one before HB in my inventory. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that people may have.

I did have movies running and had copied in Gaear's extra half-dozen movies. I have since disabled movies using the front end and even deleted the HB movie when it still CTDed. Still getting the same result though. I'm not using any special display settings or wide screen views. Again, please let me know if you have any ideas of what I can try. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately you're probably out of luck if you don't have any pre-Hickory Branch saves. Usually when a game CTDs like that it means it can't find a proto/mob somewhere that's supposed to be there, and there's no way around that once your saves have that data stored. I guess the truly safe thing to do in terms of saves is to keep a good one from each major sequence in the game, in addition to the normal 'rotation.' Sorry.

No idea what could be causing it - the kobolds and their bullets used to be screwy that way*, but I'm pretty sure we got rid of all of those. You didn't do any consoling, did you?

*That's probably what's behind the drow rogue reports btw; they have 'pixie arrows' or something like that, another projectile that the game probably doesn't like or has trouble keeping track of.

(It's not likely anything to do with movies, incidentally.)

Blast. I kind of figured it would be bad news like that but I was hoping. My fault really - got distracted and did other stuff before I got back to my problem. Oh well, it will give me a chance to test WB again.

At least it isn't the movies - those are a nice little addition btw. I hadn't found them until last week and they add a bit of flavor that these places needed.

Does WB, HB, and moathose respawn have to be done in sequence to get Verbobonc dialouge? I just finished the Hedrack fight and AoH and I got WB dialouge from BroSmyth. I just want to see the new Verbobonc.

You finished AoH and then got Welkwood dialog from Smyth? That should be impossible ... although I guess the chest spawns regardless. We'll have to fix that.

You have to have talked to the leads Smyth gives you for each expansion before the next can be available, assuming the story state condition is also met.

WB - talk to Captain Renton
HB - talk to Kenter Nevets
AoH - talk to Master of the Arena
    MR - talk to Kent

    Verbo is next.

I got WB, but didn't do it and I went back to Smyth and got Kent dialouge and did moathouse respawn. Went to Smyth and got Verbo. I never did talk to Nevets or do HB.
Kill a few spiders-levelup,move to next room encounter and levelup. Happened 5/6 times. There's not enough xp in the whole scenario to do that.

I am starting a new game and went to talk to Terjon. I was expecting to get the Moathouse quest from him but it was never a choice. I believe that the you can get the quest when you first start talking to him so I ended my conversation and tried again - no dice. I went through every choice in the dialogues with him and it never came up.

I thought about it and had talked to Spugnoir before I went to Terjon. He (Spugnoir) had revealed the location of the Moathouse to me. So I reloaded to a point before I talked to Spugnoir and went and talked to Terjon and bingo, he had the quest for me in his opening dialogue choices.

I just wanted to see if it is supposed to work this way - you can't get the quest from Terjon if you know where the moathouse is. (I also seem to recall another player reporting something like this but I can't find the post).

When you learn of the Moathouse, the story state advances to 1. It appears that one of the conditions for Terjon to mention it is that the story state be 0. That has always been the case, although it wasn't always the case that he gave you the associated quest. That was added by Co8 at some point.

So yes, I think that's as it should be. He won't send you to clear out bandits there if you already know about it.

    [edit]

Regarding Falrinth and his potion/scroll, that's actually an item that is created in his inventory when he enters combat or starts his round, under certain conditions. It's intended to simulate a scroll but is a potion because NPCs can't use scrolls, I believe. It's really not intended to be looted.

    [edit 2]

I figured out the uniforms thing - you could get unlimited uniforms by talking to Wilfrick about it over and over again because the dialog never became unavailable. Fixed now.

But ... you could only get that dialog with Wilfrick if Darlia had mentioned the assassination job to you, which in turn could only happen if you did his first two quests. @Necro, if you weren't going bad guy route, how did you get that far? (Or is there another bug that lets you get that dialog when you shouldn't?)

When, where, and how did you discuss that with Wilfrick?

    [edit 3]

This was all due to the chest being spawned without needing to talk to Nevets first. Fixed.

    [edit 4]

Ouch, there were indeed four pouches of 'rogue' bullets on the HB map around the location you described. Sorry you had to be the sacrificial lamb for that, but good catch.
