I already do support society in many ways. I also put everything at risk in order to help others in their time of worst need. Even the the worst fools should have someone trying to help them. I actually believe in some sort of health care reform. What worries me is that decisions are made by the U.S. Congress, which is heavily influences by big business, like insurance companies.
maggit said; "I think everyone should have a right to free* healthcare, a home and education ... " I must disagree with you on that my friend. I believe everyone should have the right to be paid fairly for their work, so they can provide healthcare, home and education for themselves and their family. You give someone everything they need for free they never see the need to provide for themselves. Nothing is free, someone has to pay for it and I'm really tired of paying for people to hide out in college, or just decide not to work and collect wellfare. I was watching a show on TV that talked about the numerous families that are 3rd and 4th generation wellfare recipients, meaning that his father never worked, his grandfather never worked and now he doesn't work. If someone can have the same, or better than a working-class man has for not working ... where's the motivation to contribute to society instead of draining upon it? I remember a time when a man was ashamed of taking a handout, now it's expected?
The idea of welfare is to help the ones in need, not the ones who try to benefit from it. Don't deprive the ones who really need it because there are people who abuse the system. And, SirChet, I never said that welfare recipients should have it better than the working man. Welfare should be just enough money to survive, not to buy a new car or whatever. And if someone is OK with living near the bottom of society and doesn't even try to improve, there's something awfully wrong with them. This only means that society failed somewhere on the way and we have to think where. Lack of responsibility, solidarity in education, bad role models, parents... (well that's 100% certain if the guy is a 3rd generation welfare beneficiary, isn't it? ) What about Labour Offices, Social Work? These offices should not only control the money they give out but also encourage people to find a job perhaps even under the threat of loosing the benefits. In Poland, you get an unemployment benefit only up to 6 months and only after you have worked at one place for at least a year. Still, I think it's better to have those deadbeats than make them homeless and push them into crime. Yes, I'm oversimplyfing. oke: You pay money to the government. Why not want something in return, when you need it? It's never a shame to ask for help when you need it. If it's only a one way street, why pay them at all?
I would take a nap. :asleep: That's over two years away ... who cares? Might as well be 2112. As for Lady Gaga, I think she's weird and skanky, but I also think she has a nice voice. (She doesn't always use it, but she can when she wants to. That's starkly different from other manufactured 'artists' of our time - Britney Spears et al. It means she actually has some talent, which means - gasp - she may be legit whether we like it or not. She's certainly got an ear for pop songs.)
It is just a matter of history. You see, people in country "X" paid taxes and received free healthcare*. Of course, it was not free, they paid for it with their taxes. Now, they pay the same taxes, but their healthcare is taken from them. Why? It is like paying money and not getting what was paid for, is not it? (Or, for that case, having tax increase without anything added given to citizens.) *The same goes for education and even apartments. "X" designates any formerly communist country.
We do have so called free health care in America. Anyone can go to a county clinic and claim they are indigent and they will receive medical care as to what they need. Granted, they may not get porcelain caps on their teeth, but they will get the cavity fixed or the tooth pulled. We all like to talk about how the question asked at the registration of an emergency room is what is your insurance, but we forget what happens if you have no insurance ... you get treated anyway. I grew up dirt poor, one of 13 kids with a breadman as a father, (a damn good father I might add) but we had to go to the free clinic for our hurts and exams. I can say first hand, free health care does exist for those who seek it. The taxes from good people working hard payed for my health care as a child and my taxes help pay for the same and I'm happy to provide for those who genuinely need it. My taxes should not pay for supporting a life style of sloth. If you are not willing to work you should not eat, have a car, a cell phone, or a house. Necessity is a great motivator, being hungry can make even a lazy man look for a job. If he choses crime instead, then he was not worth the effort of any help anyway and he will be fed, clothed and housed in jail. What pains me is when I work hard at keeping my business afloat and yet I drive through the government assisted living apartment complexes to repair the fire alarms and see new Escalades parked in the driveways and the people just hanging out not working.
Those who do not work (but are able to work) and live for state help are, of course, not good, but there are even worse people - those, whose work produces negative results...
You mean like 95% of the presidents of the united states? Like every aspect of government around the world? Like BP? Like wall street stock brokers? Like sallie mae and freddie mac? Like big banks giving loans to people that can't pay them back so the government has to give them squillions of dollars so they can give themselves millions of dollars of bonuses for being incompetent? Like the judicial system slapping people's wrist so they can go out and commit more crime? Like the waitress at the Texas Roadhouse that fumbles your table's !@#$%^& tray and dumps it all on the floor?! Yeah, I hate that. A lot.
