Due to a bug encounter (and being a noob at D&D, at low level as well) it was very difficult to actually enjoy playing the game so I quit in 2005, but now that I actually leveled my guy to at least lvl8 - it's a BLAST! I mean, I've never played a game so long a day like this one for the past few. It was so cool - we're always using fireballs for everything that has a lot of guys in one place and lightning bolt for peeps that hog corridoors. Now I even challenged the Hedrack guy XD. He pleaded for his god Iuz to help (what a wuss eh?) lol - but I still killed him (not Iuz). I got myself killed after that, but I've never felt so powerful in the game - ever. Hmmm... Just one question now arose in my mind. For a wizard - why isn't there a useful lvl4 spell? I mean, the fireball kicks ass at lvl3, but lvl4 spells are all lame and useless so far. I love the game - "who needs Diablo 3 when I've got T-O-E-E" < my tagline
Stoneskin is perhaps one of the greatest 4th level spells ever. Try it, you'll like it. Your mage never has to take damage again. Also, get a feat called extend spell. You can make any of your spells that you must choose have double the duration, which is pure win, but it counts as one level higher spell. Like, I like to do haste. It's a 3rd level spell. I use the extend spell feat on it and it becomes a 4th level spell and has double duration. You can't beat that with a stick! Other spell feats can make some lower level spells take up higher level slots and do some quite nifty things. It's all about the meta-feats, babay! If you had a wizard with all the meta feats and then jacked up your spells, you could murder the circle of eight in Greyhawk and become the Circle Of ONE!
I chose Dimension door and Stoneskin for 4th lvl spells. It sucks I chose the feat of necromancy prefference, since the spells there suck (except that I can choose one extra in each lvl, but they still suck) and they're mostly touch attacks (my wiz is no melee guy <_<), because i couldve just picked the extend, the widen and etc. What feats are those that take up higher slots?
You can also drag your 3rd level spells into the 4th level slot. That way you get to use them even more! -Mike
They are the metamagic feats. They grant spells greater potency in exchange for using a higher level spell slot. Extend Spell - Doubles the duration of a spell. Takes one spell level higher to cast. Empower Spell - Multiplies the result of a variable effect (one that uses a dice roll) by 150% (usually for +50% damage on fireball and whatnot). Takes two spell levels higher to cast. Maximize Spell - Gives the maximum result of a variable effect, as if the dice rolls on the spell were perfectly rolled. Takes three spell levels higher to cast. Silent Spell - Allows you to cast verbal spells without a verbal component. Takes one spell level higher to cast. Still Spell - Allows you to cast somatic spells (ones that require gestures) without a somatic component. Takes one spell level higher to cast. Heighten Spell - Effectively raises the spell level used to cast the spell, which increases the spell Difficulty Check and possibly allowing it to bypass things such as Minor Globe of Invulnerability. This can increase the spell level however high you desire, up to a maximum of your highest spell level. Widen Spell - Doubles the size of the spell's effect. Takes three spell levels higher to cast. Quicken Spell - Allows you to cast a spell as a free action and taking no time. You can only cast one quickened spell per turn. Takes four spell levels higher to cast. Also, I'm unsure if it is intended, but you can apply the same metamagic multiple times. For instance, you could prepare an extended extended extended extended haste that would last 5 times the normal duration, but require a 7th level spell slot. On the topic of preparing spells in higher spell levels, you don't need metamagics to do that. Any caster that prepares their spells (wizard, druid, cleric, ranger, paladin) can put lower level spells in higher level spell slots. If you find you don't like your wizard's current 4th level spell selection you can fill it with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells like haste and glitterdust.
I unfortunately must agree with you about low level necromantic spells sucking. They do, can't get around that one. But the high level necromantic spells? They are terror. Horrid wilting comes to mind right away. Finger of death is the most sure way to kill opponents with one shot a lot of the time.
I'll fix Animate Dead soon enough. Having a quick look, if you just want to blat things, try Ice Storm. Otherwise I reckon there are a lot of interesting things at lvl 4, but no, none that leap out like Fireball. It still comes a long way behind Civilisation in the "don't leave the computer for days" stakes.
I really forgot that I'd want the lvl5 cleric spell "Slay Living". Can my wizard be like lvl7 and also lvl5 cleric? I don't know how that goes, really.
sure he can, just choose cleric when you level up next time. But keep in mind that when the other party members are 12th level, this one will only be 5/7. It is a matter of opinion that multiclassing spellcasters is ill-advised.
Hmmm, I'm lvl8 now and thats 1/7 (cle-wiz), so... I still don't see a huge benefit of the level 5 spells, since I looked at them and they sounded meh. Plus, I'm still just playing through the ToEE with patch 3.0, so the level 10 is the max. But I wanted to know if I can reach multiclass 10/10 smth. Btw, where do I get some thieves' tools? I accidentally sold mine off somewhere.
Because you are playing with patch 3, your NPCs are not humbled and that may be how the tools got sold. At any rate, I'm amazed you made it this far without getting FUBARed. Thieves tools are available from Skole or his boss I do not suggest advancing anymore levels of cleric.
FUBAR lol. No no, I sold them off myself, but didn't think I'd need them for some possible chests. Hmm... what if it was the official 2.0 patch? I'm guessing if 3.0 doesn't have it - then the 2.0 shouldn't either. Well, if you don't suggest that, then can you tell me if it'd still work? I mean the lvl10 cleric and lvl10 wizard combo.
P.S. I just read up that the metamagic doesn't work on the sorcerers :/ And the metamagic doesn't select more than the first screen of spells to enhance. That's a shame I've never even understood how to use it to this point, but now I see it still wouldn't work anyway... :/ Hmmm... I've managed to also play the game, wearing "magic ring" x2 and only now figured i should try to identify them. lol, I really don't know how I got this far, but the key point to do anything is just level, level and level.
Is it possible to multiclass so that your character class is greater than 10? I don't believe so (speaks cautiously waiting to see if my nuts will get stomped on). Protection and resistance rings still work regardless of identification. Metamagic works fine for sorcerors. I believe you are having the same confusion that I had last year. You may be reading about how one cannot metamagic spontaneous healing/inflicting/summoning spells (clerics, druids).
Ten levels max anyway, anyhow. Patch3 is useless. Patch2 over it. Humble_npc is in the downloads section. Makes a world of difference.
