Does the no cd crack reduce the number of crashes/CDTs for an installation with the CO8 5.5.0 Beta activated and official patches 1 & 2 installed? Put another way: If I've installed patches 1 & 2 and installad and activated the CO8 5.5.0 Beta mod can I reduce potential crashes further by installing the no cd crack?
Looking at it from another perspective... :errf: ...will the no-cd patch make my installation less stable? Should I avoid installing it?
Many people (myself included) simply cannot play the game without the no-cd installed. The game will not even start in it's factory state on some systems. Quite a few of those scenarios are caused by the buggy SecureRom that the crack bypasses. I don't know if the crack will help your game crash less often (in fact, I doubt it would, as the patch 2 version of the game doesn't even include the .dll bundled in the toee.exe,) but I can't imagine it making things worse. Unless you install the wrong no-cd, of course. Make sure you get the patch 2 version of the crack, otherwise you will have many, many issues if it plays at all. The patch 2 version is very small, about 16-17 kb as a .rar or .zip, the unpacked toee.exe is 33 kb.
Those are the sizes of the one I've got. My download manager absolutely hates it but it looks like it's the right file. I'm not sure how often it accesses the disc in-game but I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's a CTD risk each time. I'm not sure if that's correct but I thought I'd install it anyway on the offchance.
You are lucky to not need the crack. I have a legal copy that I'm trying to get up and running on my fiancee's laptop. It runs fine on my computer but when I try to play it on hers it gives me the famous "no cd" error. I don;t want to resort to using the crack because there is a rumor that it is a virus. Does anyone have any definitive proof that the no cd crack is a virus? If you don't need the crack then don't install.
There's a stickied thread about the "Virus Warning" but the short version is this: it is not a virus or trojan. Many AV programs label it as such because it bypasses the securerom in the game, but it is a false positive.
Ok, if you get that no CD error, try to reinstall ToEE It took me about 20 to 25 times to get it on here in a period of about 2 to 3 months. I still cant get it on my Aunts computer though.
Ok I guess I didn't doge the "no cd bullet". Once I switched over to the Co8 mod pack it started giving me the same error as the one on my fiancee's laptop I went ahead and installed the fix. I hate DRM. All it is doing is punishing legit users! I bought the damn game and it should just work! Grr.... Thanks for the clarification. I read the sticky but I couldn't sort out a definitive answer from it. That will set my mind at ease.
Ok I am having a similar problem with this. I recently had to wipe my laptop and had to reinstall toee (vista 32-bit). I got it installed fine along with patches 1 and 2. I tried installing the 33kb no-cd crack and it says i don't have permissions to write it to the folder. I have UAC disabled, AVG turned off (stopped services too), and i have set all users to have full administrator control. It still says that i don't have rights. I even moved the Atari folder out of program files and just on the base C:\ drive. Still doesn't let me copy it to the folder. I wish i still had my discs but i lost them a couple years ago. Looks like i'll have to buy it again, luckily its cheap. If anyone has ideas i'm open to suggestions.
I had the same problem when re-installing on a new hard drive after the old one crashed. I had forgotten that you need to run WinRar (or whatever program you are using) as an administrator, even if you have UAC off and all users set as administrators. Hope that helps.
