(SO, IS THE POLL REALLY ANONYMOUS? ) Actually, I make a conscius decision to trust someone. Otherwise, I don't let them get into a position where I have to trust them. Remember, A disappeared for 3 days on VD weekend: Fodder for Insanity. I'm waiting for evidence of a problem, rather than killing myself over the POSSIBILITY of a problem.
I prefer to trust, but I've been burned enough to know that there's rarely evidence. At work and at home.
For me, trust has to be earned. It's not automatic. Now that goes both ways, so I know I'll have to earn someone's trust as well. At work, given what I do and what I deal with, I RARELY trust anyone. You want me to trust you, you better damn well earn it! Burn me/betray that trust, and we're going to have problems for a long, long, time. There's more than a handlful of peopel/firms/companies out there who'll I'll NEVER trust again. It's much safer that way. Been burned too many times and it's cost my past companies various problems.
Good question. Hard question. Trust is relative and conditional. Many factors involved. The only way I can answer this question is to see the issue as the forest rather than the tree, because, individually, no one answer fits. I see the majority of people as doing the best they can, despite appearances to the contrary. I believe, if it were possible, they would do better. As such, I trust people. This belief is probably based on my own understanding of myself. There are some that you know immediately, you cannot trust, their self interest is too close at hand. I like the quote that started the thread off. Gutshot is bad, bad, bad. But it is better than living a life in fear. Infinitely better. So I voted that I usually trust most people, even though that may not be true. In a generic sense, I do...1x1, probably very few, or within specific areas. It is a worthy goal to work on...setting boundaries, learning trust.
