Unless you've been living under a rock or have been TOTALLY immersed in ToEE, we elected our first NON-WHITE president. Quite the accomplishment for a country founded on slavery!

I'd like to know the thoughts and feelings of our world wide Co8 family regarding this historic and momentous occassion.

For me personally, it was a moving and exhilirating experience. I was actually misty eyed during Obama's acceptance sppech. I can't help but to finally have a good feeling and a reason for hope for the future of our country and the future for our children. This was definitely a life changing experience for all of us planet dwellers!!

    For ShingingTed especially....
I heard on the news that Sydney was celebrating in the streets upon the announcement last night. Were you one of the revelers?

No matter who won, these elections were a sort of a breakthrough
for the US. I mean, there was a chance that a woman would be
elected president as well (until Obama got the nomination), so they
were revolutionary nevertheless (I wonder when something like that
    will happen in Poland).

I don't know much about their political programmes, though as far
as I'm concerned I'm pretty liberal, so I guess I'd vote for a democrat...

Anyway, I know he's seen as the hope for the betterment the situation
of America and even if nothing changes much he will remain an important
    symbol.

On a sidenote: watching Bush was kind of entertaining, he'd always do
something stupid. But I guess it's different when you're looking from the
outside. I mean our president does stupid things all the time, he makes
an idiot of himself as frequently as Bush did, however he's not the president
of one of the most influential countries in the world... so you didn't hear about
his goof-ups as frequently as we did.

Isn't this the first president from Illinois since that tall, skinny guy who writes on envelopes? We've had 3 from Texas in my life time. ;)

    Whoops! Four:

    Eisenhower
    Johnson
    Bush I
    Bush II

    Bush 1 doesn't count, he's from Massechoo-thingy.
Not a chance. I'm very glad Obama got elected (albeit I have a lot of time for McCain too) but if there was dancing in the streets here, it was a very small street and the camera crew did the dancing themselves.

I think the color of his skin has got everyone giddy. I see too many similarities to 1992. If the Republicans get their shit together by 2010, they will paralyze Congress and prevent the needed reforms from getting enacted as they did under Gingrich in 1994.

I'll stay here in Taiwan, thank you very much, which is having its own historic event this very moment. The China (P.R.C.) bureaucrat assigned to Taiwan relations is in Taipei today talking with the president here (Republic of China, a.k.a. Taiwan). This is the early stages of possible reunification talks. The pro-independence people are having demonstations which are turning violent but under control.

Although I do not relish the thought, I fully expect the PRC flag to be flown over Taiwan in my lifetime. What the pro-independence people here do not realize is that the US will not protect them. How can "we"? "You" are in hock up to your eyeballs to the Mainland Chinese.

The We/You dichotomy is due to my still holding my U.S. passport but not paying taxes there. I would have voted for Obama, but "they" made it very inconvenient for expatriate Americans to vote (unless one is in the armed forces). See where I am going with this?

I agree completely. He's the one I didn't count the first time. He lives in Houston, now. And Ike lived in Kansas when he was an adult.

I'm not sure of our track record as presidents. Eisenhower is generally respected, but the things he did without resorting to war, exceeded those who preceded and followed him WITH war. I don't mean this in a good way. A lot of that is still secret.

Johnson is disliked by everyone, but it is HIS name at the bottom of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. And this at a time when most Democrats were busy keeping people like Obama out of their restaurants and schools.

If Obama really IS the agent of change, then he must be a bastard. Forgive him then, it's for the sake of our children. Someone has to sacrifice for the sake of the rest.

I have precariously formed the opinion that bad people who do good things are good people. This gives me comfort in spite of the state of my own soul. I know I'm going to hell, but I feel satisfied.

    Don't worry GA82, you won't be alone.

I happen to be on the Infernal Board of Directors. I could put in a "evil" (good) word for you, if you want. Who knows, I might even be able to get you that great condo with the view overlooking the Lake of Fire!

Who knows if it's true, but those who know him and are quoted in the news say he is made of steel. His rumored 1st picks have "bastard" reps. If that's what it takes to make the changes he's said he wants, then I'm all for it.

I'll probably see you in hell, but I'm likely to get there first. BTW, I want the condo. No hellish mosquitoes, though.

Get there first? Really? Who was president when you were born? I've named mine.

If you DO get there first, tell Pop hello. And tell Satan I'm crazy about his daughter and her daughters. (Inside joke.) Don't forget to turn on the AC in the condo. Overlooking the Lake of Fire means OVER the Lake of Fire.

    Emirkol:
I'm not interested in the Board of Directors. I consort with with hellspawn, but I DO have standards. NO Insurance People (except actuaries).

Don't worry about the hellish mosqitoes, it's hell, not Montana. :yikes:
