I've pronounced it "Burn" since the early '80s. I'd like to see (hear?) all voice files edited to cut off the "extra" syllable. Was anyone else disappointed with Troika's choice in pronunciation? How did other PnP players imagine his name pronounced? --thearioch
I never knew him from PnP, but I always imagined and preferred "Burn" in ToEE, based on the spelling. "Bernie" sounds goofy to me, like you might as well call him Freddy or Bubba. Removing the e sound from the end of the voiced audio might be harder than it seems, unfortunately.
There is Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and Burne Hogarth, both pronounced 'Burn', but I know someone, and he calls himself 'Burn-Ey', so I have to go with that.
I thought of it as 'Burn' when I read the original module, but changing the voice-files at this point would be silly.
Yeah, it would be silly to change that but it does sound goofy. I never played the pnp module, so when I first met saw him I expected him to be called 'Burn' not 'Burn-E' it was a funny surprise I guess.
Not that I think there is anything wrong with this, but back in the olden days there was a large debate of the sexual orientation or Rufus and Berne (since there is only one master bedroom in the tower!). I always thought the names were a weak reference to Sesame Street's Ernie and Bert, but I see conspiracies everywhere... so I vote (B)ernie.
I've always thought of him as 'Bernie' as well. And personally, I think 'Burn' sounds sillier than 'Bernie'. But then again I always tend to refer to him and his associate as 'Burne and Doofus'
I guess I could start a poll and see if anyone wanted to change "Rufus" to "Slash" (or would that be "Slashe"?). And, for all of my home-schooled homies who remember the late '80s..."We're Rufus...and Burn-e, and we like the BOOM"...You Will Hate Me Foerever if You Listen to This! --thearioch
Since I'm here... I've always called him Burnie. Why wouldn't you when all the other names are Elmo, Otis, Rufus, etc.? Maybe everyone is wrong, and it's pronounced Burn-ay? Is Screng pronounced Screnj? Murfles Murf-les? Time is better spent on things that matter more than something so subjective. ...:questionm
@ Spike I wasn't sure where to post the this poll. It wasn't meant to be a serious mod request (I have a dry sense of humor -- I didn't expect anybody to think I was really asking anyone to actually spend the time cutting every voiced use of the name.) After I learn how to find/access the audio files, I might do it for myself. If you can think of a more appropriate forum (The ToEE forum in the Troika's Games category, maybe) I wouldn't object to a moderator moving it there. --thearioch
This probably does belong in the ToEE forum so people won't think it's being seriously discussed as a possibilty for a modification. It sure fooled me.
I would tell everyone to GO BY WHAT the game has progammed in for when all the other characters speak of him they all say "BernE" Right!? It's been a wile since I have had a chance to play. I have been busy with going to college to learn how to program these style of games, but I do recall some voice playback in my ear! I think BURN would actually be more professional, but I believe the developers set the other towns people to call him burnE, I heard one of them say rufus and burnE ect. ect. ect.
In my current, highly protosized/consolized game, it's Burnedette. Female, long black hair, with the JadeEmpress/Darley portrait. I have reservations about him, and he doesn't fit my all-female party. hence the female conversion. The female version is much better looking.
C'mon, how can you avoid hitting a link with that name? Fine, here are *my* lyrics: [Burny] So many chars, where can we start? [Rufus] We like them dumb and we like them smart. [Burny] I like the ones from the mages' guilds, [Rufus] Well I like, all kinds of builds. [Burny] Stop. What happened, how about the ones we especially like? [Rufus] Which ones? [Burny] You know the ones with the wands that go.. [Rufus] I hear you.. [Burny] Hit it! {beat...............} [Rufus] It was me and the party with Burn-y B We were cruising the dungeon for all to see When low and behold there appeared a mirage, A wizard pulling out a wand from extraplanar storage We stopped short, did a double take, He was looking so fly, I thought I wasn't awake. He was obviously prepping a spell I assume, And then he turned the little stick and his wand went boom. We like the wands, the wands that go boom, We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. We like the wands, the wands that go boom. We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. We like them big, and we like them small, We like them one, and we like them all. They're always adding damage when they find the room, Cuz they know we like the chars with the wands that go boom. And see my wizard really knows where it's at, He's got a 5d6 Empowered Fireball that's phat. He makes a comment about giving it room, But I'd rather stay close to the wand that goes boom. We like the wands, the wands that go boom, We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. We like the wands, the wands that go boom. We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. Now if your wand ain't got it, go out and get it, We like the boom and don't you forget it. So turn down the range, and increase the flare, So your damage can hit almost any square. Cuz when you're in a dungeon you can't go far, Without needing the boom to clear a corridor. So if your wand is weak, then please don't show it, Coz we like the wands that up can blow it. We like the wands, the wands that go boom, We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. We like the wands, the wands that go boom. We're Rufus and Burny and we like the boom. Everybody just point your wand Everybody just point your wand if you want us, Now clap! Hit it! Bang, bang bang bang bang! Come on everybody! Hey, hey hey hey hey! Bang, bang bang bang bang! {beat continues......}
