Try upping your Survival skill on one of your characters at each levelup. This affects the ability of your party to detect an encounter, and give you the choice of fighting them or avoiding combat. it is a primary skill for barbarians, druids and rangers - so hopefully you have one! Not as effective taken as a cross-class skill. Also the spyglass tool (expensive in the beginning, and only available AFAIK on the initial shopmap and from the "friendly" shopkeepers Rannos & Gremag) helps you improve your chances of avoiding random encounters. That i believe was a Co8 modded item, though i may be mistaken. If you are clearing out the Moathouse, use the "safe" room in the tower previously occupied by the spider, as this will keep you from needing to keep traversing the shopmap. Maybe that will help, as i assume you are still quite low level. someone from Co8 will need to speak on actual further game mechanics in the engine regarding the way random encounters work.
No. Yes. A high survival skill lets you see them coming. Otherwise you can always try fleeing combat via the radial menu.
not much that much need to avoid random encounters just make sure u got : 1)a cleric (preferably with improved turning) this one will break pretty much any undie' u randomly encounter 2)some melee chars with a 'few' rogue levels, between 2 of these guys u can take just about anything alive down in 1-2 turns tops optional: 3)maybe a bard and trow fascinate on the toughest opponent so hes out of play until u can safely deal with him 4)a rapid shot ranger(hell also be an excellent survival guy) to further concentrate fire on smth u need to take down fast 5)if u find the game rly rly hard then feel free to bring npc&polearms into the mix and by all means have a damn sorc with u and specialize it in crowd control spells: sleep, grease, web, glitter dust, and later on cheesy spells like fireball, cloud kill....
The Survival skill is a class skill for Druids, Barbarians, and Rangers. If you have one of these in your party, max it out, as you will face RE throughout the game and being able to choose who you fight is very handy. Survival is WIS based, so make sure whoever has this skill has a decent score. If you don't have one of the wilderness character classes in the party, give it as a cross class skill to a fighter, as they don't have any good skills to use besides Tumble. The Spyglass gives a +2 boost to your Spot skill, which can help vs RE, it can be bought on the start map or at The traders.
I am trying to solo a magic user. I have had some success by selecting survival skill focus, by spending on survival skill and by using the telescope, but it seams that its only a matter of time before I get jumped, surrounded and murdered by a random mob.
Wow, solo with a magic user, yup you must be a glutton for punishment. heh heh I would have to at least have two magic users against the world.
If you are going solo, especially as a mage, you might want to recruit Elmo and maybe some others. Not only to assist with the Melee but to keep the critters off when your sending your spells the enemies way. You can also have him/them take a level in ranger or spend their skill points to max out survival.
I'm trying to find the source, but I recall that Survival AND Spot AND Listen will reduce random encounters (or give you he choice to avoid, if desired). These are all class skills for Druids, and another reason why I always (well, post-Livonya) get Meleny ASAP.
The Circle of Eight Modpack 7.1.0 NC - Release Notes.txt file states: The Spyglass' long description states: Rannos Davl and Gremag have a 90% chance of having a spyglass for sale (in their trading post in Hommlet).
A cleric/druid is probably your best bet to truly solo, with no help from anyone else, NPC and PC. I have felt that summons and crafting are a must, at least for me,to really get you through the game.
The bigest problem is the random ecoutners. If you are on your own and you get jumped you can be dead before you have a chance to act. survival skill speciality, the tellescope, improved initiative and Upping t listen and spot scores help me last loger but i still get jumped and die. Does anyone have any hints on how to flee combat in random encounters. I have had some success in webbing opponant and running to the furthest corner of the screen. somtimes i can get far enouth away that the combat ends automaticly.
