Because it is for the common collective good of the country and it's people. :poke:

And I'm not in a union.

    And I don't get benefits.

And if you are not in the good old boys network, you have to accept unfair labor practices.

And I'm a 41 year old white male.

And I'm an american, such as it is.

I am just one person of the 95% of the US's population that have to scrounge from paycheck to paycheck to make the other 5% of the US population rich so they don't have to do anything except make bad decisions and have their unlawful acts swept under the rug. This is the true definition of freedom in our country and is what every war the US has ever been involved in stands for. The US fights so that the civilians can slave for the greedy freely.

    *edit*
I am feeling marginally better than yesterday, which is to say that I'm still crippled but the edge is off the more fatigued parts, slightly. My toe is not happy with me about this job.

The job will stop sucking in about 6 months, then you will be laid off. ;)

This has nothing to do with any trade union, it is a state law.

Well, the only purpose of [most] trade unions in Russia is to gather money from members, gather money from the state, and then distribute them among higher members of trade unions. So I am not in the union either. But the law protects me from overworking.

That's the purpose of union in the U.S., too. That, and getting their friends elected. But the 40 hour work week is law because of the unions. And if Nec isn't getting overtime, then the law is being evaded.

See, overworking is a subjective term. Most people consider overworking to be anything over 40 hours a week but I work 3 times as hard as most everybody else during the first 40 hours of work, so I'm really getting screwed. I should be getting triple overtime for anything over 40 hours.

I'm considering moving to Russia and living the easy life! I want to sail cutting edge nuclear submarines with Sean Connery.

they should invent a system that pays jobs according to the hard work the worker puts in it

They used to have jobs like that and it was called incentive pay. The harder you worked, the more you got paid, usually in factory/production positions. However, I haven't heard of anymore jobs like that being around for a looooong time. I think the term "commission" replaced incentive.

Not sure that's true. My understanding is that back in the days of the Great Depression, when the unions were organizing, they were trying for a 32 hr work week. And never got it.

I'm not sure they should lose credit for what was accomplished because they advocated an even shorter work week. The working people actually had very few advocates in the late 1800's. Certainly not the politicians.

    HOFFA! HOFFA! HOFFA! HOFFA!

Today is a super fabulous day. Hallmark let everyone go early because the longford broke down and they need to have a piece of machine overnighted so they can fix it! In my best Marv Albert voice...YYYEEESSSSSS!!!

    Look for the union label
when you are buying that coat, dress or blouse.
    Remember somewhere our union’s sewing,
our wages going to feed the kids, and run the house.
We work hard, but who’s complaining?
Thanks to the I.L.G. we’re paying our way!
So always look for the union label,
it says we’re able to make it in the U.S.A.!

That's a Whole Lotta Rosie the riveter, the precursor to the union idea around wartime.

Uh...Thanks, Nec! It's like I haven't seen that picture all my life. ;)

Guilds were the precursors to unions in the middle ages. Actual unions came about as shopkeepers and merchants pressed their rights and increasing power against the dying power of the feudal nobility. Later, workers organized unions to, basically, end indentured servitude and improve working conditions back in the early industrial age, late 18th century and afterwards.

Since this was done from 30+ year old memory, it can't be completely correct. The prof, Keith Southerland, from Maine, has been dead since 1976.

    (So,,,We like AC/DC, do we?)

They come from the right part of the world, don't they?

We have strong unions here: they're a foundation of strong democracy. Like free markets, independant magistrates or the press. And like free markets, independant magistrates and the press they can be corrupted, self serving, self destructive and down-right idiotic. But if anyone says, "get rid of them altogether", keep your eyes on him and feel for your hatchet.
